Coastal Adaptation to Sea level rise Tool (COAST)

Developed at the University of Southern Maine with funding from the EPA, the COAST program predicts damages from varying amounts of sea level rise (SLR) and storms of various intensities, and evaluates relative benefits and costs of response strategies. Although it is a technical tool, COAST can connect the technical with the social, political, and economic realities of local adaptation. Stakeholders are involved when they parametrize the model. Being entirely driven by the participants, the tool uses locally derived data on vulnerable assets such as real estate, economic activity, infrastructure, and natural resources.

Climate Action Plan of the Sierra Nevada: A Regional Approach to Address Climate Change

December 2009

The California state agency, Sierra Nevada Conservancy, completed a Climate Action Plan for the the Sierra Nevada region of the state with support from the California Natural Resources Agency. This plan looks at climate change impacts across the region, what additional actions can be taken in mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change, and the gaps in information that were most prevalent for these efforts as of 2009. The plan includes 49 Action items, or specific activities, for addressing regional climate change impacts.

Climate Change and The Economy: Expected Impacts and Their Implications

October 27, 2009

A series of climate change impact studies was undertaken by researchers at universities around the U.S. to evaluate economic costs related to particular climate-sensitive resources. This publication assembles six of these studies, with a focus on water resources in New Mexico; forests in Tennessee, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming; infrastructure in Alaska; and coastlines in Florida, North Carolina and Texas.

Impacts of Climate Change on Forests of the Northern Rocky Mountains

The forests of the northern Rocky Mountains are projected to have severe impacts from climate change. These impacts are summarized in this report in an accessible format intended for distribution to the general public. The study was conducted by the College of Forest Resources at the University of Montana and funded by a grant from the National Commission on Energy Policy, a project of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Clean Energy Works Portland, Oregon

June 1, 2009

The City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Planning and Sustainability pilot program - Clean Energy Works Portland - provides solar panel installation and energy efficiency upgrades to members of the Portland community. Clean Energy Works Portland’s primary focus is on employing workers coming from frontline populations, including people of color and women. This focus is enforced through a legally binding “Community Workforce Agreement” (CWA), requiring that of the hours worked in completion of the Program, at least 30% must have been completed by individuals that have historically been disadvantaged or underrepresented in the workforce, which includes people of color, women, and low-income individuals.

DOI Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Natural Resource Science

May 8, 2013

The U. S. Department of Interior (DOI) announced in May 2013 the establishment of a federal advisory committee who will provide guidance about the Interior Department’s climate change adaptation science initiatives. The Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Natural Resource Science will advise the Secretary of the Interior about the USGS National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center and the Department of the Interior Climate Science Centers (CSCs), which are managed by the U. S. Geological Survey.

Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Ecosystem Services

December 18, 2012

This report was developed as technical input for the 2014 National Climate Assessment*, to synthesize the scientific understanding of the way climate change is affecting ecosystems, ecosystem services and the diversity of species, as well as what strategies might be used by natural resource practitioners to decrease current and future risks. More than 60 federal, academic and other scientists authored this impact assessment.

Achieving Hazard-Resilient Coastal and Waterfront Smart Growth

September 21, 2012

In August 2011, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the state Sea Grant College Programs of Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Texas hosted a two-day roundtable meeting of national experts from the fields of smart growth, hazard mitigation, climate change adaptation, and coastal management. The roundtable brought together these experts to share ideas about how coastal and waterfront communities could improve quality of life, use land and other resources efficiently, and create environmentally and economically sustainable neighborhoods while minimizing risks from natural hazards related to coastal and waterfront flooding.

Climate Change in Coastal Florida: Economic Impacts of Sea Level Rise

September 2008

Based on a study conducted by Florida State University in 2008, this publication synthesizes the analysis and  findings associated with sea-level rise and associated impacts to six counties along Florida's Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Key findings include more frequent storm surge events, increased storm damages, larger areas at risk for inundation, and more coastal property in harm's way.   The value of land at risk is presented in a summarized chart for three Florida counties (Dade, Duval, and Escambia County) using IPCC’s sea level rise scenarios (in 2005$).

Climate Change in Coastal Areas in Florida: Sea Level Rise Estimation and Economic Analysis to Year 2080

August 2008

In this report the results of downscaled modeling efforts of the effect of sea level rise on six coastal counties in Florida are presented, including: Dade, Dixie, Duval, Escambia, Monroe and Wakulla counties. Additionally, assessments of  the potential economic impacts that this phenomenon could have are presented. Using representative storms, estimates are provided of the damage that could be inflicted from storm surge and flooding, both of which will become more intense and more frequent as a consequence of climate change.
