Coastal Flooding in the Northeast United States Due to Climate Change

December 2007

This report assesses the affects of sea level rise (SLR) on storm surge and flooding in the northeastern United States.   In this study, historical sea level information for storm surge anomalies at five sites in the region (from Massachusetts to New Jersey) was compiled and the impacts of climate change and local sea level effects were then added to this analysis. The change in recurrence intervals of storm surges due to possible SLR scenarios is estimated. Also, the study compares the boundaries of a 100-year coastal storm flooding event in Boston developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with the flooding boundaries of these estimated storm surges for 2005 and 2100 to further prepare for the potential social and economic impacts of climate change on coastal areas.

Regional Impacts of Climate Change: Four Case Studies in the United States

December 2007

This report presents four case studies of climate change impacts in different regions of the country: The Heat is On: Climate Change & Heatwaves in the Midwest; The Importance of Climate Change for Future Wildfire Scenarios in the Western United States; Gulf Coast Wetland Sustainability in a Changing Climate; and Ramifications of Climate Change for Chesapeake Bay Hypoxia (also in the clearinghouse as individual entries). Each case study focuses on a specific type of impact of particular concern to a U.

Gulf Coast Wetland Sustainability in a Changing Climate

December 2007

This paper describes the current and projected impacts on Gulf coast wetlands from land development and water management practices, in concert with the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events such as hurricanes, flooding as well as sea-level rise. It is one of four case studies in an overall report, "Regional Impacts of Climate Change: Four Case Studies in the United States," that examines impacts of particular interest to different regions of the U. S. .

Alaska's IAWG 2008 Final Report: Recommendations Report to the Governor's Sub-Cabinet on Climate Change

2008

Alaska's Immediate Action Workgroup (IAWG) was formed in 2007 to make and prioritize annual recommendations to address climate change threats to the State's communities. The IAWG examined the needs and priorities of a sub-set of communities under imminent threat from climate change impacts, including Kivalina, Koyukuk, Newtok, Shaktoolik, Shismaref, and Unalakleet. This is the first annual report, and it is applicable to recommended actions for 2008-2009. .

Effects of Climate Change on Florida's Ocean and Coastal Resources

June 2009

The Florida Oceans and Coastal Council prepared this report in 2009 to provide a foundation for future discussions of the effects of global climate change on Florida's ocean and coastal resources, and to inform Floridians about the current state of scientific knowledge regarding climate change. The report provides a high-level overview of the impacts to infrastructure, human health and the economy, as well as key drivers such as increasing air temperatures, warming ocean temperatures, and sea level rise.

Emerging Climate Change Impacts on Freshwater Resources: A Perspective on Transformed Watersheds

June 2009

This report discusses the increasing effects of climate change on freshwater resources and ecosystem services. It focuses on types of socioeconomic and biotic adaptations, and provides an overview of direct and cumulative impacts.   Perspectives on adaptive responses are offered, and the results of five case studies are included which demonstrate regional adaptation measures. The series of case studies - from Massachusetts, New York, Georgia, Florida, Colorado, and California - are used to illustrate ecosystem services that are able to adapt to to extreme variations in precipitation.
