The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change

The Lancet Countdown is an international, multidisciplinary research collaboration that has developed indicators to track the progress of climate change mitigation and adaptation in terms of public health globally. The analysis provides an assessment of the health effects of climate change, the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and the health implications of these actions on populations worldwide. In 2016 the Lancet Countdown proposed a set of potential indicators to be monitored, and coordinated a global analysis to define this conclusive set of indicators for 2017.

U.S. GAO report: Climate Change - Information on Potential Economic Effects Could Help Guide Federal Efforts to Reduce Fiscal Exposure (GAO-17-720)

The U. S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has analyzed the current and long-term aggregate economic impacts of climate change on the U. S. , the methods utilized for climate economic impact assessments, and the accuracy of modeling these projections. GAO investigated the financial risks to the federal government, and this report also provides information about how these economic impacts could inform efforts to manage climate risks across the federal government. Ultimately, GAO concludes that “the federal government has not undertaken strategic, government-wide planning to manage climate risks, using the best available information, including information on the potential economic effects of climate change, to identify and assess significant risks.

Carlsbad, California Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment

This report from the City of Carlsbad, California - located along the state’s southern coast - evaluates the magnitude and likelihood of impacts due to sea level rise and coastal hazards on city assets. The report considers damage to assets from flooding and erosion based on sea level rise scenarios through 2050 and 2100. Vulnerability ratings are given by asset type, along with recommended adaptation strategies to inform planning, decision-making, and the city’s Local Coastal Program and Zoning Ordinance.

Oregon 2017 Integrated Water Resources Strategy

The 2017 edition of Oregon’s Integrated Water Resources Strategy builds on the state’s 2012 strategy and is aimed at predicting and meeting the state’s instream and out-of-stream water needs, both now and in the future. The updated version addresses climate change as a “cross-cutting issue” and illustrates the need for continuous monitoring of water resources as predictions based off of historical data becomes unpredictable because of climate change. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Resilience Strategy

The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania released its Resilience Strategy in March 2017 to provide a holistic strategy for helping the city to manage challenges from a changing environment, globalization, and urbanization. The Strategy sets goals, objectives, and action organized around a “P4” community-centered framework addressing resilience in terms of People, Place, Planet, and Performance. The Strategy is intended to be a blueprint to help the city prepare for resilience challenges by helping the city improve coordination among government and non-governmental organizations, improve budgeting and capital coordination citywide, ensure the institutionalization of resilience practices, and increase resident engagement and empowerment.

Quantifying the influence of global warming on unprecedented extreme climate events

In this “extreme event attribution” study, a team of researchers from Stanford University and other partner organizations developed a four-step framework to test whether, and to what extent, global warming contributes to extreme weather events. Using this framework researchers can quantify the influence of global warming on extreme events in both current and future climates. The authors suggest that the results offer decision makers valuable information for adaptation planning, such as for resilient infrastructure design, resource management, and disaster risk management.

Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Policy 5408: Addressing the Risks of Climate Change

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) established a policy in March of 2017 stating that WDFW will manage its operations and assets so as to better understand, mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The policy provides guidance for managing risks to agency investments due to climate impacts, such as upgrades to agency infrastructure to be more climate ready, and investing in land acquisitions that support ecosystem resilience. WDFW states that this policy demonstrates their leadership on the issue of climate change - specifically as they are integrating the science necessary to understand climate risks, proactively responding to those risks, and reducing their own carbon footprint.

RainReady Calumet Corridor, IL Plan
2017
This plan outlines a vision for stormwater management, sustainable economic development, and integrated planning to enhance resilience within the Calumet Corridor in Cook County, Illinois (20 miles south of Chicago). This area experienced a severe rain and wind storm in April 2013 resulting in urban flooding and widespread property damage. The region’s flat, low-lying topography, historical patterns of land development that covered natural land with impervious surfaces, the changing climate, and aging infrastructure all contribute to the Corridor’s vulnerability to future flooding.
