Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for the Upper Snake River Watershed Tribes
February 2017
The Upper Snake River Tribes include the Burns Paiute Tribe, Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe, Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation, and Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation that together are represented by the Upper Snake River Tribes (USRT) Foundation. The USRT assessment focused on climate change vulnerabilities of their reservations in the 97,000 acre watershed in the Great Basin region - primarily in Idaho, with reservation lands extending into southwest Oregon and northeastern Nevada.

Avoiding Septic Shock: How Climate Change can cause Septic System Failure and Whether New England States are Prepared

This white paper discusses climate change impacts on septic systems in New England, and whether states in the region are prepared for these impacts. The paper provides a state-by-state analysis of septic system regulations in New England and discusses how these regulatory frameworks are not fully considering climate change impacts, especially groundwater table rise. It also identifies challenges in septic system regulation, and suggests recommendations and best practices for how states and municipalities can work to change laws, amend rules, or adopt new policies or incentives to better construct, manage, and regulate septic systems to be resilient to climate change.

Building Coastal Resilience for Greater U.S. Security

The Building Coastal Resilience for Greater U. S. Security project created a forum for coastal experts from the United States and globally to develop solutions for climate change impacts on coastal infrastructure, economy, communities and national security. The Hoover Institution, the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars jointly convened a series of discussions to advance coastal resilience to climate change impacts by identifying knowledge gaps and establishing policy solutions.

Green Infrastructure to Green Jobs in Savannah, Georgia
2017-2018
Savannah, Georgia’s Office of Sustainability and partners launched a green infrastructure initiative to restore the city’s urban forest, manage coastal stormwater flooding, and renew marginalized or lower-income neighborhoods. This project was funded through the Southeast Sustainable Communities Fund which supports local communities in the southeastern U.S. to advance climate adaptation and social equity in local government policy, plans and programs.

Azavea Climate Lab and API
2018
Azavea’s climate change analysis tool is designed to help local decision-makers adapt with standardized, localized and accessible climate data. The application supports interactive climate impact modeling, and is scaled to cities nationwide. The Climate API provides access to historic and projected (1950-2100) low temperature, high temperature and precipitation data - with 22 climate indicators for over 1,000 U. S. locations. The Lab features downloadable charts for inclusion in presentations and briefs, as well as direct downloads for the data and reproducible API calls for users looking to incorporate these data into other applications.

Advancing Community Adaptation - A Framework for Project Prioritization and Decision Making in coastal Louisiana
2018
Louisiana faces severe climate change impacts of sea level rise and extreme weather events, and related flooding, subsidence, and coastal erosion. The Center for Planning Excellence and Dr. Denise Reed collaborated to develop this adaptation framework for coastal Louisiana, with a particular focus on non-structural elements and the communities impacted in the region. This framework is a tool for a more holistic approach to planning coastal community resilience, and provides near- and long-term strategies for flood risk mitigation and implementing adaptation measures.

Miami Forever Bond - City of Miami, Florida

In 2017, the City of Miami, Florida passed the $400 million “Miami Forever Bond” authorizing the City government to borrow money through a general obligation bond to address sea-level rise and Miami’s affordable housing crisis. A 3 percent property tax will be used to repay the debt. Miami is one of the most vulnerable cities in the U. S. to sea level rise - facing increasing and compounding climate change impacts from flooding, storm surge, and saltwater intrusion into the Miami’s drinking water.
