Impacts of Climate Change on Transportation: Freight Flow in Gulf Coast
2008
From the Transportation Research Board (TRB) report Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U. S. Transportation, this case study describes the transportation sector’s response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It focuses on the storms’ impact to national-level freight movement, highlighting efforts to reroute traffic in order to avoid long-lasting disruptions. Despite damage to Gulf Coast transportation systems from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the region experienced only modest disruptions to freight flow because transportation system redundancies allowed traffic to be rerouted away from impacted areas.

The Effects of Climate Change on American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes
2008
This article discusses how the U. S. can do a better job of addressing tribes in climate policy, given the unique risks tribes face and the unique legal structures that govern tribes. As the safety, culture, and economies of many tribes are threatened along with the environment, the authors argue that the needs of tribes must be taken into account, and that tribes need to be at the table. Recommendations are made on how tribes can better fit into the existing policy and governance landscape, "both within the framework of federal law and through the exercise of tribal sovereignty.

NWF Climate-Smart Communities Program
The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Climate-Smart Communities program helps cities and towns use nature-based approaches to prepare themselves for the impacts of climate change in ways that support people, wildlife, and habitat. The program aims to prepare communities for climate impacts; refrain from responses that are maladaptive for wildlife; and prepare for extreme weather such as heat waves, drought, wildfires, water shortages, flooding, sea level rise, and more.
