Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink
October 10, 2019
From the National Audubon Society, this report describes a comprehensive climate change vulnerability assessment for North American birds. The study projects avian species geographic range changes due to climatic shifts, identifies the most vulnerable species and locations, and maps the risk of various climate hazards to avian species. The results of this study can inform conservation priorities as they help identify the species and locations most in need of climate adaptation solutions. Audubon examined the current and projected geographic range of 604 bird species across North America to establish a vulnerability rating (neutral, low, moderate, or high) based on a comparison of future range loss and gain for individual species and species groupings by habitat.

Caltrans District Climate Change Vulnerability Assessments (2019)
October 2019
Between 2017 and 2019, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) produced climate change vulnerability assessments and corresponding GIS mapping tools for each of its twelve districts covering the state to help build resilience through transportation decisionmaking. For each Caltrans district, the assessments include high-level overviews of climate change impacts (summary reports) and detailed technical reports on the processes used to identify relevant climate impacts. The reports and mapping tools are designed to help Caltrans planners understand impacts to the portions of the State Highway System (SHS) and other assets in each district, and plan projects accordingly to ensure resilience under future conditions.

Incorporating the Costs and Benefits of Adaptation Measures in Preparation for Extreme Weather Events and Climate Change (NCHRP Report 938)
2020
This guidebook, Incorporating the Costs and Benefits of Adaptation Measures in Preparation for Extreme Weather Events and Climate Change (Guidebook), provides a comprehensive resource to help transportation agencies incorporate cost-benefit analysis (CBA) into planning processes and decisions regarding needs for adapting to climate change and extreme weather. The Guidebook was published in 2020 and developed through the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, with input from practitioners at state departments of transportation (DOTs).

California Heat Assessment Tool (CHAT)
2019
The California Heat Assessment Tool (CHAT) was developed to help state and local public health officials understand how heat vulnerability will change with increasing temperatures due to climate change. The tool helps users identify heat vulnerable areas based upon changes in high heat days under different climate scenarios and social, health and environmental vulnerability factors. The study defines "Heat Health Events" (HHEs) as heat events that cause negative public health impacts - and the study found that vulnerable groups may be more sensitive to high-heat days by as much as 6 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit as compared to the general population.

Health Equity Report for the District of Columbia 2018
February 8, 2019
The Health Equity Report for the District of Columbia 2018 from DC Health takes a comprehensive look at social and structural determinants of health in Washington D.C. and presents the extent of health disparities aligning with differences in income, race, and geography. The report recognizes that climate change poses long-term risks to human health, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable, and that climate adaptation is critical to reduce negative impacts on all people.

4th National Climate Assessment, Volume II: Impacts, Risks, and Adaptation in the United States
November 23, 2018
On November 23, 2018, the U. S. Global Change Research Program released Volume II of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4) entitled Impacts, Risks and Adaptation in the United States. NCA4 includes sixteen chapters focusing on national topics and specific sectors, nine chapters focusing on different regions of the country, and two chapters focusing on both mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation responses to climate change. NCA4 concludes that: “ [o]bservations collected around the world provide significant, clear, and compelling evidence that global average temperature is much higher, and is rising more rapidly, than anything modern civilization has experienced, with widespread and growing impacts.

IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C - Summary for Policymakers
October 8, 2018
The Paris Agreement adopted by 195 nations at the 21st UN Conference of the Parties (COP21) in 2015 responds to climate change by “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1. 5°C above pre-industrial levels. ” In turn, the UNFCCC invited the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide this Special Report on the impacts of global warming of 1. 5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Mid-Atlantic Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the Mid-Atlantic Climate Change Response Framework Project
October 2018
This U. S. Forest Service report develop provides an assessment of the vulnerability of forest ecosystems in the Mid-Atlantic region and was designed to help resource managers incorporate climate change considerations into management practices. The report synthesizes the best available scientific information on climate change and forest ecosystems, focusing on a study area including 60 million acres of land across eastern Maryland, southern New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Of this area, about 32 million acres are forested.

Triangle Regional Resilience Partnership Resilience Assessment
November 2018
The Triangle Regional Resiliency Partnership (TRRP) is a joint project of municipalities and counties in the “Triangle Region” of North Carolina including the Town of Cary, Town of Chapel Hill, City of Durham, City of Raleigh, Durham County, and Orange County. The first project of the Partnership was a resiliency assessment of the area’s assets and risks - in partnership with the University of North Carolina Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) and the Triangle J Council of Governments.

ND-GAIN Urban Adaptation Assessment
October 2018
The Urban Adaptation Assessment (UAA) is an interactive database within a visual platform to support city leaders in decisionmaking related to climate adaptation and resilience. The tool utilizes data from over 270 cities within the United States, including all 50 states and Puerto Rico, whose populations are above 100,000. The UAA is free, open source data - in a user friendly tool to help prioritize climate strategies and mechanisms for sustained urban climate resilience. For each city, indicators of climate vulnerabilities in the built environment, and indicators of social vulnerability are established and mapped at a sub-city or census tract level.
