San Mateo County, California Climate Action Plan - Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

December 2011

The San Mateo County vulnerability assessment was conducted as a collaborative effort between ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, PMC, San Mateo County’s Planning and Building Department as well as the San Mateo County Vulnerability Assessment Working Group. This assessment addresses the impacts of climate change on public health, water supply, and agriculture (including farms and managed timber) due to temperature and precipitation changes; wildfires; and the impacts of sea level rise on built infrastructure and ecosystems.

Washington State DOT Climate Impacts Vulnerability Assessment

November 2011

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has written this report in fulfillment of a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to test its conceptual climate risk assessment model developed for transportation infrastructure. WSDOT applied the model using scenario planning in a series of statewide workshops, using local experts, to create a qualitative assessment of climate vulnerability on its assets in each region and mode of transportation across Washington. This report conveys WSDOT’s feedback on the conceptual model and the lessons learned while applying the model to their assets.

Oahu MPO Transportation Asset Climate Change Risk Assessment

Sea-Level Rise: A Transportation Vulnerability Assessment of the Wilmington, Delaware Region

July 2011

This assessment was prepared by the staff of the Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO), the Metropolitan Planning Organization for New Castle County, Delaware and Cecil County, Maryland, to identify the vulnerabilities of the area’s transportation infrastructure to climate change. The body of the report is broken into five chapters:  background, methodology, regional impacts, cluster (neighborhood level) profiles, and policy recommendations.

The Unusual Nature of Recent Snowpack Declines in the North American Cordillera

June 9, 2011

This report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) analyzes late-20th century snowpack reductions data to support findings that snowpack in the Western regions of North America has been declining since 1950. The data suggests that snowpack declines in the Rocky Mountains over the last 30 years are unusual compared to the past few centuries.

Identifying Species in Pennsylvania Potentially Vulnerable to Climate Change

June 2011

From the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program, the goals of this project were to first compile a priority list of species occurring in Pennsylvania that are likely vulnerable to climate change, and to then examine the climate change vulnerability of species included in the priority list. The overall objective was to not only identify climate change vulnerable species but to also examine the abiotic factors and life history characteristics that contribute to their increased vulnerability.

The FY 2011-2015 Virginia Coastal Needs and Strategies report (for projects conducted between October 1, 2011 - September 30, 2016) was a product of Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Coastal Zone Management (CZM) program. The Assessment was reviewed and approved in April 2011 by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA's) Ocean and Coastal Resource Management program.

This report presents a series of case studies describing the approaches currently (as of 2011) being taken by four water utilities in the United States to assess their vulnerability to climate change. The report is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of assessment approaches or utilities conducting vulnerability assessments. Rather, its purpose is to illustrate a range of issues and current approaches taken by selected utilities that are proactive in climate adaptation to understand and respond to climate risk.

Initial Estimates of the Ecological and Economic Consequences of Sea Level Rise on the Florida Keys

February 3, 2011

The study, by the Nature Conservancy, is intended to catalyze interest in examining sea level rise impacts and developing adaptation strategies for the Florida Keys and similar islands in Florida and around the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Basin.   In 2007, the Conservancy acquired high-resolution Digital Elevation Models derived from airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data for Big Pine Key. Future shoreline locations and distribution of major habitats of Big Pine Key in the year 2100 were estimated using sea level rise scenarios described in the scientific literature.
