Adapting to Sea Level Rise: A Guide to California's Coastal Communities

January 2012

'Adapting to Sea Level Rise: A Guide for California’s Coastal Communities'  was created to serve as a guide for California’s coastal managers and community planners to develop adaptation plans for sea level rise that are suited to their local conditions and communities. The Guide begins with background information about climate change and sea level rise and an explanation of why planners in coastal communities should begin to plan for sea level rise and the associated coastal hazards. The remaining sections describe the processes of performing sea level rise vulnerability assessments and risk analysis for the development of adaptation plans that can be tailored specifically to individual communities.

Planning for Sea Level Rise in the Northeast: Considerations for the Implementation of Tidal Wetland Habitat Restoration Projects

November 2011

This report is based on the results of a workshop held by the Northeast Region of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Restoration Center. This document provides a review of sea level rise (SLR) impacts on tidal wetlands in the Northeast as well as step-by-step guidance on the incorporation of relative sea level rise into tidal wetland restoration design. The report outlines a five part process to guide impact analyses and planning during their feasibility, design and monitoring phases.

Adaptation Action Areas Guidebook: A Planning Guidebook for Florida's Local Government

August 2015

This Guidebook is designed for local governments of coastal communities in Florida interested in integrating Adaptation Action Areas (AAAs) into policy and operational frameworks. Adopted into the Florida Statute in 2011 through the Community Planning Act, an “Adaptation Action Area” is an optional designation within a local government comprehensive plan for areas that experience coastal flooding and sea-level rise - for the purpose of prioritizing funding for infrastructure needs and adaptation planning.

Restoring the Great Lakes' Coastal Future - Technical Guidance for the Design and Implementation of Climate-Smart Restoration Projects

2011

The purpose of this report is to provide an initial suite of tools and methods to assist in the planning and implementation of climate-smart restoration by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its partners and grantees. The National Wildlife Federation and EcoAdapt have partnered with NOAA’s Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program to include climate change in the design and implementation of Great Lakes restoration projects. This guide presents a project-based approach to adjusting restoration activities to address the impacts of climate change on the region.

Sea Level Rise Ready: Model Comprehensive Plan Goals, Objectives, and Policies to address SLR Impacts in Florida

May 2010

'Sea Level Rise Ready' presents selected model comprehensive planning goals, objectives, and policies meant to address local sea level rise adaptation for a hypothetical city/county in Southwest Florida. It offers best practice examples from other jurisdictions that illustrate the use of SLR adaptation policies, and it concludes that “low or no regrets” actions can be implemented now and in many cases already have been taken by one or more local jurisdictions. Model Goal 1 creates a "Vulnerable Area" overlay for spatial planning, while Goals 2, 3, and 4 establish a framework for pursuing the adaptation strategies of Protection, Accommodation, and Managed Retreat within the overlay.

Climate Ready Communities: A Strategy for Adapting to Impacts of Climate Change on the Oregon Coast

January 2009

Developed by the Oregon Coastal Management Program, this report is designed to help Oregon's local decision-makers prepare adaptation plans and state agencies to coordinate their infrastructure plans with local adaptation initiatives. Key objectives of this strategy are: 1) to enable coastal local governments to prepare adaptation plans by 2015 to account for the effects of climate change on property, infrastructure, habitats, and resources; and 2) to ensure that public infrastructure and investment decisions made by the State of Oregon are coordinated with local government climate change adaptation plans.
