To address the impacts of climate change, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service developed a strategic plan, "Rising to the Urgent Challenges of a Changing Climate," (see separate entry) which establishes a basic framework from which the Service and their employees can work with the larger conservation community to help ensure the sustainability of fish, wildlife and their habitats.

On November 15, 2008, 10 organizations consisting of non-profits and Massachusetts state agencies sponsored a conference at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts. The conference, "Responding to Climate Change: Working Together to Conserve Land, Wildlife and Habitat," was the first of its kind in the Commonwealth and in the nation. The conference brought together nearly 200 conservation leaders from across 60 organizations, including scientists, land stewards, hunters, anglers, government officials, advocates, foundation officers, and policy-makers.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) provides training opportunities for FWS staff to increase their knowledge of climate science and climate change as they relate to resource management. NCTC also partners with others to bring field scientists and practitioners new learning opportunities in the form of on-line courses, workshops, and webinars. While some courses are specifically designed for Fish and Wildlife Service employees, most are relevant to any conservation professional.

In this resolution, passed April 23, 2009, the Maine legislature directed its Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create a stakeholder group with the purpose of evaluating the measures available to non-governmental organizations, state agencies, and the business community to prepare for and adapt to the most likely impacts of climate change. The DEP is directed to plan for the issues raised in the 2009 climate impact assessment, including considering ways to create a hospitable landscape for the development of greenhouse gas offset projects and emission technologies.

The framework presented in this report may be used to categorize the relative vulnerability of species to climate change. There are four modules that compose this framework. These modules walk the user through a systematic process for (1) categorizing a species’ baseline vulnerability to extinction or major population reduction, (2) categorizing a species’ vulnerability to future climate change, (3) developing a matrix that provides an overall score of the species’ vulnerability to non-climate and climate change stressors, and (4) qualitatively determining the uncertainty in the estimate of a species’ vulnerability.

This document provides voluntary guidance that can be used by state fish and wildlife agencies to better incorporate current and expected impacts of climate change into Wildlife Action Plans. The report presents steps for developing a wildlife adaptation strategy, the process for revising state Wildlife Action Plans, and tools to support the planning and implementation process, including vulnerability assessments and monitoring. Relevant case studies are included in each chapter.

This report, from the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), recommends strategies to help wildlife adapt to the conditions caused by climate change, including providing land corridors, and reducing stress from pollution and invasive species. Included are five steps for safeguarding wildlife from climate change, and eleven wildlife profiles which address impacts to specific vulnerable eco-regions and provide possible solutions. .

The State of Nevada is amending its State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) to incorporate the potential effects of climate change in more detail. The Nevada Department of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Nevada Natural Heritage Program (a NatureServe network member program), Lahontan Audubon Society, and Great Basin Bird Observatory have formed a partnership to complete the amendment. Nevada's SWAP was approved in 2006, and although it identified climate change as a stressor to key habitats and species of conservation concern in a few specific areas, it did not address the degree of vulnerability each species may face due to a warming climate.
