The U. S. DOI/USGS Northwest Climate Science Center (NW CSC) has announced 2018 funding available for Principal Investigators (PIs) from the NW CSC University Consortium (University of Washington, Boise State Univ. , Univ. of Montana, Washington State Univ. , and Western Washington Univ. ) as well as all USGS PIs. Funded projects will address the goals identified in the NW CSC Science Agenda for 2018-23, through scientific research or data synthesis on climate impacts on endangered species, regional adaptation and management, and social systems.

Habitat conservation project grants and cooperative agreements are awarded for habitat conservation activities including coastal and marine habitat restoration and protection. The Wildlife Conservation Society partnered with the Climate Resilience Fund to offer this guidance for investors funding conservation projects - such as private foundations, public agencies and local governments - on how to consider climate change risks inherent in their investments. Climate change is causing dramatic and unpredictable effects on ecosystems and natural resources - creating uncertainties for conservation funding decision making and the future outcome of investments. This guidance for conservation investors supports intentionality in anticipating and assessing climate change risks, which in turn safeguards these investments to advance conservation goals.

California’s Wildlife Conservation Board, within the Department of Fish and Wildlife, is a separate and independent Board with authority and funding to carry out an acquisition and development program for wildlife conservation. The Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Program was created by CA Assembly Bill 109 in 2017 to provide $20,000,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Board for local assistance, payable from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), a statewide cap-and-trade program. The program funds are to be used for climate adaption and resiliency projects that will result in conservation and restoration of natural and working lands, and wildlife populations.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program annually provides grants of up to $1 million to coastal and Great Lakes states, as well as U. S. territories to protect, restore and enhance coastal wetland ecosystems and associated uplands, providing long-term conservation benefits to fish and wildlife and their habitats. Over $17 million in total will be awarded by the USFWS to 20 projects in 10 coastal states to protect, restore or enhance more than 13,000 acres of coastal wetlands and adjacent upland habitats under the program.

On March 23, 2016 the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) announced they will provide nearly $6.5 million to fund tribal projects that promote climate change adaptation and ocean and coastal management planning. The BIA’s Tribal Climate Resilience Program is responding to the Recommendations of the President’s State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience and helping to implement President Obama’s Climate Action Plan.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Climate Adaptation Fund supports one to two-year projects that implement science-driven, on-the-ground actions that assist wildlife and ecosystems to adapt to climate change at a landscape scale. The Fund provides a total of $2.5 million in grant awards between $50,000 and $250,000 to conservation non-profit organizations each year.

Administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Tribal Wildlife Grants program is a competitive grant program available to federally-recognized Indian tribes to conserve fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. More than $60 million has gone to Native American tribes through the Tribal Wildlife Grants program since 2003, providing support for 350 conservation projects administered by participating Federally-recognized tribes. This wildlife conservation funding includes that for the focal species of Native American cultural or traditional importance, and species that are not hunted or fished.

The U. S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is funding research through the Pacific Islands Climate Science Center (CSC) on the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) human migration dynamics in 2016. This project will examine the extent to which direct and indirect links between patterns of human migration and climate events can be identified. The researchers will examine migration trends and motivations, characterize changes that have taken place to local lands and ecosystems in the RMI, and use projections of climate change to understand which islands and communities may be at highest risk in the future.
