Global Warming in the Free State

July 2008

This comprehensive climate change impact assessment was developed to support adaptation planning in the state of Maryland. It was prepared by a Scientific and Technical Working Group, by leading experts in the state in climate change and its impacts, including experts from the University of Maryland.  This assessment informed development of the state's Phase II Adaptation Strategy, A Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Maryland's Vulnerability to Climate Change.

Adaptation: An Issue Brief for Business

July 2008

From the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, this publication provides an overview of adaptation from a business perspective. It describes potential impacts of climate change, risks and opportunities for business, and why business should consider adaptation planning and measures. Hotter and Drier: The West's Changed Climate

March 2008

Comparing average temperatures in the last five years to 20th century averages, the West has experienced 70 percent more warming than the world as a whole. This report assesses impacts the West faces with rising temperatures and changes in precipitation levels and patterns. Chapters 6 and 7 provide an overview of mitigation actions to date (2008) and makes high-level recommendations for policymakers. Appendix A provides a 100-year analysis of warming for each of the 11 states in the West (1908-2007).

The Capacity and Likelihood of Climate Change Adaptation in the World's Fisheries

February 13, 2008

Contributing scientists have calculated the likely impact of climate change on the distribution of more than 1,000 species of fish around the world. This research was carried out by scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA), the Sea Around Us project at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Princeton University.

Climate Ready Estuaries

The Climate Ready Estuaries program is a partnership between the U. S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Estuary Programs (NEPs) to address climate change in coastal areas. This effort, initiated in 2008, brings together EPA's Oceans and Coastal Protection Division and Climate Change Division. The purpose of Climate Ready Estuaries is to assist NEPs and coastal communities in becoming "climate ready" by providing tools and assistance to assess climate change vulnerability and plan for adaptation.

From Impacts to Adaptation: Canada in a Changing Climate 2007

2008

This assessment discusses current and future risks and opportunities that climate change presents to Canada, with a focus on human and managed systems. It is based on a critical analysis of existing knowledge, including both published scientific and technical literature and expert knowledge. The current state of understanding is presented, and key knowledge gaps are identified. Many of the chapters address issues specific to a particular region. However there are also chapters that address Canada in the international context, and moving forward on adaptation.

An Integrated DOI Plan for Addressing the Effects of Climate Change on Natural Systems

2008

In March 2007, former Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne established the Department of the Interior (DOI) Climate Change Task Force. Three subcommittees were formed to undertake this assignment. This Draft report was issued by the Science Subcommittee to identify the science and information needed to assist the DOI in addressing the consequences of climate change and to suggest possible options for developing, coordinating, acquiring, and analyzing any additional scientific information that would be helpful for that purpose.

NWF Climate-Smart Communities Program

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Climate-Smart Communities program helps cities and towns use nature-based approaches to prepare themselves for the impacts of climate change in ways that support people, wildlife, and habitat. The program aims to prepare communities for climate impacts; refrain from responses that are maladaptive for wildlife; and prepare for extreme weather such as heat waves, drought, wildfires, water shortages, flooding, sea level rise, and more.
