Identifying Species in Pennsylvania Potentially Vulnerable to Climate Change

June 2011

From the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program, the goals of this project were to first compile a priority list of species occurring in Pennsylvania that are likely vulnerable to climate change, and to then examine the climate change vulnerability of species included in the priority list. The overall objective was to not only identify climate change vulnerable species but to also examine the abiotic factors and life history characteristics that contribute to their increased vulnerability.

NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index

April 2011

The NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) can help identify plant and animal species that are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Using the Index, information is readily available about a species' natural history, distribution and landscape circumstances to predict whether it will likely suffer habitat loss, population reductions, or both during the coming years. CCVI can be used as part of a variety of analyses, including assessing the relative risk of species listed in State Wildlife Action Plans or part of any assessment of the vulnerability of species to climate change.

Vermont Adaptation White Papers

April 2011

This compilation of nine white papers includes an introduction to the climate science and impacts relevant to Vermont and eight sector-specific reports in the areas of Agriculture, Water Resources, Recreation, Forestry, Public Health, Public Safety, Fish and Wildlife, and Transportation.   Each sector report provides an overview of the climate impacts and vulnerabilities facing that sector, what programs are already in place to address those challenges, prospective adaptation strategies, and policy recommendations.

Legal Considerations for Climate Change Impacts on Tribes’ Off-Reservation Resources

April 2011

Roughly 1. 2 million U. S. tribal members living on or near reservations are experiencing constraints on their lifestyles and economic activity due to the impacts of climate change. Forest resources are deteriorating due to invasive species, while salmon are threatened by warmer water temperatures. In the United States, the federal government has an obligation to exercise legal authorities to protect tribal lands, resources and rights. Because ecosystems and ecosystem impacts permeate jurisdictions and borders, tribal dependence on the land extends beyond on-reservation resources.

SECURE Water Act Section 9503-Reclamation Climate Change and Water 2016

April 2011

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation developed this report in response to the SECURE Water Act of 2009 - outlining climate change impacts on water basins in the Southwestern U.S. The report provides comprehensive assessments of risk across each of Reclamation's major eight basins and summarizes hydrologic changes that would take place in response to projected climate change.

Scanning the Conservation Horizon: A Guide to Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

2011

This report from the National Wildlife Federation is designed to assist fish and wildlife managers and other conservation and resource professionals to better plan, execute, and interpret vulnerability assessments in support of wildlife conservation and ecosystem-based adaptation.   Key steps for assessing ecosystems, habitats and species vulnerability to climate change are described. This guidance material details various approaches for assessing sensitivity, exposure, and adaptive capacity, at each of these biological levels.

Flood Frequency Estimates for New England River Restoration Projects: Considering Climate Change in Project Design

2011

Prepared by the NOAA Fisheries Service, this 2011 flood frequency brief and provides guidance for incorporating climate change into river restoration projects. The report explains recent climate and streamflow research, helping river restoration practitioners on improving estimates of flood frequency and magnitude for project design. The document focuses on New England, but is applicable as general guidance for the entire northeastern United States.
