Climate Change and Agriculture, Including Aquaculture and Fisheries, in New Jersey

January 2016

The Rutgers Climate Institute put together this fact sheet to provide a brief and accessible summary of the impacts of climate change on agriculture in New Jersey, which includes climate effects that will impact crops, livestock, aquaculture, and fisheries. It explores the primary climate change risks to agriculture and fisheries in the state, and provides short summaries on how these sectors can both adapt to climate risks and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

U.S. DOI Pacific Island Climate Science Center: Research Funding - Hawaii, Marshall Islands

December 18, 2014

The U. S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is funding research through the Pacific Islands Climate Science Center (CSC) on the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) human migration dynamics in 2016. This project will examine the extent to which direct and indirect links between patterns of human migration and climate events can be identified. The researchers will examine migration trends and motivations, characterize changes that have taken place to local lands and ecosystems in the RMI, and use projections of climate change to understand which islands and communities may be at highest risk in the future.

Colorado State Wildlife Action Plan: A Strategy for Conserving Wildlife in Colorado

2015

Colorado’s State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) summarizes the most crucial aspects of biodiversity conservation in Colorado over the next 10 years. The plan aims to address the impacts to, and develop near and long-term strategies for, the state’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) - which are the species of highest conservation priority in Colorado. This SWAP was coordinated by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) - who have chosen 55 of the SGCN to focus their efforts on, considering these species as “Tier 1” or as being in the most critical condition in terms of severity of threats and population decline.

Massachusetts Wildlife Climate Action Tool

November 23, 2015

The Massachusetts Wildlife Climate Action Tools provides information on climate change impacts and vulnerability of a variety of the state’s species and habitats; as well as adaptation strategies and actions based on user selected location and interests. The online tool is focused on fish and wildlife species, forests and forestry practices, landscape connectivity (including climate related impacts on roads and culverts), land protection, and conservation planning.

U.S. State Wildlife Action Plans, Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategies

In 2002 Congress began funding the State Wildlife Grants program with the intent to conserve wildlife in the U.S. and in particular to prevent new listings of endangered species under the provisions of the Endangered Species Act. The State Wildlife Grants program provides federal grant funds for developing and implementing programs that benefit wildlife and their habitats through annual appropriations to state wildlife agencies.

NRDC Ocean Acidification Hotspots Map

September 2015

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has developed an online interactive map of ocean acidification implications on coastal communities. The mapping approach determines where the ocean chemistry is changing most rapidly, where vulnerable species are located, and where people who most depend on these species reside. The intersection of these factors reveals an elevated risk from ocean acidification.

Delaware Wildlife Action Plan 2015-2025

2015

In accordance with congressional requirements, Delaware’s Wildlife Action Plan provides an inventory of natural resources information and conservation programs in the state, lists the species of greatest conservation needs (SGCN), their key habitats, issues, research needs, and conservation actions. In keeping with Delaware’s Wildlife Action Plan published in 2006, this updated plan published in 2015 acknowledges climate change as a primary challenge to conserving the state’s wildlife population.

New York State Wildlife Action Plan

September 2015

The New York State Wildlife Action Plan is a ten year plan designed to protect threatened and declining wildlife populations across the state, and to guide biodiversity conservation initiatives.  For the 2015 update, the NY Department of Environmental Conservation and agency partners completed assessments for nearly 600 wildlife species, and identified 366 Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) for immediate conservation action. Climate change, along with pollution, invasive species, and loss of habitat to development are the threats that are considered of highest concern to New York’s SGCN - and the plan includes many strategies to address climate impacts on these species.

Maine Wildlife Action Plan

September 2015

Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife prepared the state’s 2015 Wildlife Action Plan to protect Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and to fulfil requirements established by the State Wildlife Grant program. This updated plan focuses on developing a list of 378 SGCN based on a number of factors, including vulnerability to  climate change and cultural significance to tribes in Maine. The 2015 plan builds off of an earlier version, published in 2005, which helped secure funding that has supported enhanced habitat management, research, monitoring, population management, and outreach programs throughout the state.

NOAA Fisheries Climate Science Strategy

August 28, 2015

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service Strategy is designed to help regional fishery managers respond to climate change's effect on marine resources. The report identifies key objectives to increase production, delivery, and use of climate-related information to support the management of fish stocks, fisheries, and protected species. The Strategy outlines a clear path for NOAA Fisheries and partners to deliver the science enterprise, information and tools needed for climate-ready decision-making.
