Climate Change Adaptation: The Impact of Law on Adaptation in the Private Sector

July 2012

This resource summarizes a workshop from March 2012 among academics, non-profit and business representatives, and government officials addressing private sector adaptation to climate change that is influenced by law and public policy. The subset of private sector adaptation measures that are motivated, influenced, prevented, or constrained by government are the focus of the discussion.

Climate Change Bird Atlas

October 26, 2010

This tool helps determine suitable habitat for 147 bird species in the Eastern U. S. (east of the 100th meridian), based on current and projected climate scenarios. This information can then be used to develop large-scale projections of species' responses to climate change. By taking current distributions of bird habitat in the U. S. , and applying a variety of climate scenarios, land managers can predict which areas will be suitable for which species. Information is presented in the following forms: maps of current suitable habitat; maps of suitable habitat projections for the year 2100 under different climate scenarios; and statistical tables providing quantitative estimates of species habitat changes.

Climate Change Impact on Forest Resources in California

March 2006

This study, produced by the California Climate Change Center, evaluates the impact of climate change on California’s forest resources by developing a case study for a mixed conifer forest in the northern Sierra Nevada. The research utilized data-driven modeling tools to project the effect of a changing climate on forest growth, forest yield, and tree mortality.

Climate Change Impacts on Forestry

August 16, 2007

Changing temperature and precipitation patterns and increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2 are likely to drive significant changes in natural and modified forests. This article provides a scientific assessment of the impacts of climate change on forests worldwide giving significant attention to forests in the U. S. This review is focused on publications that discuss the changes in commercial forestry, excluding the ecosystem functions of forests and non-timber forest products. The report concentrates on potential direct and indirect impacts of climate change on the forest industry, including economic impacts, the projections of future trends in commercial forestry, the possible role of biofuels, and changes in supply and demand.

Climate Change Tree Atlas

October 26, 2010

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. By taking current distributions of tree habitat in the U. S.

Climate Change and Federal Land Management - A Comparison of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFS), National Park Service (NPS), and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Climate Change Strategies

November 2010

Developed by the Defenders of Wildlife, this report examines the strategies for responding to climate change from three major federal land management agencies - the USDA Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service. It compares and contrasts the goals, objectives and actions proposed by these plans in an effort to offer guidance to other organizations developing strategies, and to foster cooperation between agencies.

Climate Change and Forests of the Future: Managing in the Face of Uncertainty

2007

This article offers a conceptual framework for managing forested ecosystems given the uncertainty of the impacts of climate change. The article addresses both mitigation and adaptation strategies. The adaptation strategies presented include resistance options (forestall impacts and protect highly valued resources), resilience options (improve the capacity of ecosystems to return to desired conditions after disturbance), and response options (facilitate transition of ecosystems from current to new conditions).

Climate Change and The Economy: Expected Impacts and Their Implications

October 27, 2009

A series of climate change impact studies was undertaken by researchers at universities around the U.S. to evaluate economic costs related to particular climate-sensitive resources. This publication assembles six of these studies, with a focus on water resources in New Mexico; forests in Tennessee, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming; infrastructure in Alaska; and coastlines in Florida, North Carolina and Texas.

Climate Change and Water Quality in the Great Lakes Basin

August 2003

This multi-dimensional report from the Great Lakes Water Quality Board of the International Joint Commission is written for a cross-section of science, business, resource management, and policy experts in the Great Lakes region. Section 2 provides an overview of climate change and variability projections for the region, including air temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, water supply, water levels, ice cover, and water quality. Projected impacts are then provided in Section 3 pertaining to the following sectors: human health, ecosystems and biodiversity, agriculture, fish and wildlife, forests, and recreation and tourism.
