National Climate Assessment

May 6, 2014

The U. S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) has a legal mandate to conduct a National Climate Assessment (NCA) every four years, the third and most recent of which was released in May 2014. Summarizing current and future climate change impacts across the nation, the NCA is the most comprehensive assessment of climate change impacts ever conducted in the U. S.   The new report is presented on a highly interactive website, with a stunning visual presentation, intended to fully engage the general public along with decision-makers.

3rd National Climate Assessment: Indigenous Peoples, Lands, and Resources

2014

A chapter of the Third National Climate Assessment, this report provides an overview of the challenges that indigenous peoples in the United States face due to climate change, as well as the opportunities they have to prepare. Climate change will undermine indigenous ways of life and, in many cases, tribal adaptation efforts will be “limited by poverty, lack of resources, or [. . . ] because there may be no land left to call their own. ” The assessment emphasizes the importance of leveraging traditional knowledge for adaptation planning efforts.

Climate-Smart Conservation: Putting Adaptation Principles into Practice

May 2014

Developed by an expert workgroup of federal, state and non-governmental climate adaptation leaders, "Climate-Smart Conservation: Putting Adaption Principles into Practice" examines how climate change is affecting the nation's wildlife and habitats, and addresses how natural resource managers can incorporate climate change considerations into their work. The guide offers practical steps for planning conservation to enhance the resilience of wildlife and ecosystems facing climate change, and offers a “common-sense approach” to adaptation planning and implementation.

Vermont Climate Assessment: Considering Vermont’s Future in a Changing Climate

June 2014

The Vermont Climate Assessment (VCA) is the nation's first comprehensive state-level assessment of climate impacts modeled after the National Climate Assessment (NCA). The VCA mirrors the NCA structure but is tailored to the sectors most applicable to Vermont. The VCA presents state-level efforts to downscale global climate models, combining them with local knowledge and data. The assessment presents climate impacts across many sectors, as well as localized, community level vulnerabilities.

Mitigwaki idash Nibi (Our Forests and Water): A Climate Adaptation Plan for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians

2014

The Red Lake Department of Natural Resources (DNR), with support from the Model Forest Policy Program, developed this climate adaptation plan for the natural resources of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. This plan identifies goals, objectives, strategies, and action steps to address climate impacts to the forest and water systems within the Reservation. The plan will inform future resource management, development, and planning programs with the aim to help the tribe become climate resilient.

Omitted Damages: Whats Missing From the Social Cost of Carbon

March 13, 2014

The 2013 Interagency Working Group on the Social Cost of Carbon (IWG) updated the U. S. social cost of carbon (SCC) for 2015 from a central value of $24 to $37. SCC is an estimate of the economic damages associated with a small increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, conventionally one metric ton, in a given year. The SCC is meant to be a comprehensive estimate of climate change damages and includes, but is not limited to, changes in net agricultural productivity, human health, and property damages from increased flood risk.

Sierra Climate Change Toolkit - 3rd Edition

2014

The Sierra Climate Change toolkit addresses climate change across the Sierra Nevada region of California, with localized strategies for emissions reductions and adaptation. The report describes climate change impacts in the Sierra, as well as recent regulations, policy directions, and incentives to reduce emissions and adapt. Adaptation strategies are outlined for water and watershed management, wildlife and habitats, forestry, wildfire, and City and County land-use planning. This 3rd edition from the Sierra Nevada Alliance expands its focus from previous versions with more strategic detail, case studies and further support for the development of an adaptation framework that works within existing planning processes throughout the Sierra.

Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Focal Resources of the Sierra Nevada, California

February 2014

In collaboration with the U. S. Forest Service and California Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CA LCC), EcoAdapt has identified a suite of priority climate change adaptation strategies for focal ecosystems and wildlife species of the Sierra Nevada region of California including: Alpine and Subalpine Systems, Mountain Yellow-Legged Frogs, Yellow Pine/Mixed Conifer Systems, Red Fir Systems and Marten, Wet Meadows and Fens, and Oak Woodlands. After a vulnerability assessment process, draft implementation plans were developed for each of the focal resources, incorporating the priority adaptation actions.
