Journal of the American Water Resources Association (JAWRA)

JAWRA is a publication on multidisciplinary water resources issues. JAWRA papers present ideas derived from multiple disciplines woven together to give insight into a critical water issue, or are based primarily upon a single discipline with important applications to other disciplines. Papers often cover the topics of recent AWRA conferences such as riparian ecology, geographic information systems, adaptive management, and water policy.  .

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting

The Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting program provides western states and Alaska with information on future water supplies (January - June for the current year). USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service field staff collect and analyze data on depth and water equivalent of the snowpack at more than 1,200 mountain sites and estimate annual water availability, spring runoff, and summer streamflows. Individuals, organizations, and state and federal agencies use these forecasts for decisions relating to agricultural production, fish and wildlife management, municipal and industrial water supply, urban development, flood control, recreation power generation, and water quality management.

HUD-DOT-EPA Partnership for Sustainable Communities: Tools and Key Resources

One of the goals of the HUD-DOT-EPA Partnership for Sustainable Communities (PSC) is to help communities develop and support neighborhoods that provide transportation choices and affordable housing while increasing economic competitiveness and directing resources toward places with existing infrastructure. In support of this goal, the PSC has compiled a list of tools and other resources available to planners to help develop and support sustainable communities.

Heat Island Effect Portal

This website provides information on the heat island effect, its impacts, and the strategies that communities can take to reduce urban temperatures. Look under the "Where You Live" section to see specific strategies and initiatives implemented by states and localities. Strategies fall into four primary categories: cool roofs, cool pavement, green roofs, and urban landscaping. Initiatives are specific policy mechanisms, such as building codes, comprehensive plans, demonstration projects, incentives, landscape ordinances, state implementation plans, and zoning codes.

Integrated Assessment for Effective Climate Change Strategies in New York State

The “Integrated Assessment for Effective Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in New York State" project was undertaken by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) ClimAID science team.   The vulnerability assessment considers the effects of climate change on New York, including rising sea levels, increasing temperatures, and changing weather patterns. The project draws upon both local experience and scientific knowledge by involving numerous stakeholders in eight key sectors: agriculture, communications, ecosystems, energy, ocean coastal zones, public health, transportation, and water resources.

Aquarius: A Modeling System for River Basin Water Allocation

Aquarius is a software application developed by the Rocky Mountain Research Station of the U. S Forest Service and Colorado State University. The modeling system depicts the temporal and spatial allocation of water flows among competing traditional and nontraditional water uses in a river basin. The program can be used to determine economically efficient water destination strategies by systematically examining, using a nonlinear optimization technique, the feasibility of reallocating unused or marginally valuable water storage and releases in favor of alternative uses.
