Grand Rapids, Michigan Climate Resiliency Report

December 2013

The West Michigan Environmental Action Council, in partnership with the Grand Rapids Office of Energy and Sustainability, investigated climate change resiliency for Grand Rapids, Michigan with city grant funding in 2012.  The outcome of the study was the identification of key impacts across community sectors in Grand Rapids, and recommendations for managing these impacts through adaptation and resiliency planning.  Drawing on interviews from local experts from a wide range of sectors, the report uses the triple bottom line framework to analyze the social, economic, and environmental aspects of climate resiliency.

Hampton Roads Military Transportation Needs Study: Roadways Serving the Military and Sea Level Rise/Storm Surge

July 2013

This report is intended to address sea level rise and storm surge flooding related threats to military transportation infrastructure and readiness. It was prepared by the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTO) at the request of military officials, who expressed concerns in 2009 that delays at the region’s bridges and tunnels were negatively impacting their ability to carry out their missions. To address these concerns and better understand the scope of the problem, the study includes three phases; (1) a highway network analysis, (2) a survey of military commuters, and (3) an analysis of roadways serving the military and sea level rise/storm surge.

Resilience of New Jersey Transit (NJ TRANSIT) Assets to Climate Impacts

June 2012

This report assesses the potential vulnerability of New Jersey's state transit agency (NJ TRANSIT) stationary assets (rail, structures and buildings) to weather-related risks and projected climate impacts and identifies “cost-effective resilience strategies. ” While the assessment was underway, Hurricane Irene hit the state, causing $2 to $3 million in damages and losses in revenue and underscoring the need for NJ TRANSIT to plan for and build resilience against extreme weather events. The report quantifies the risks of a range of impacts to NJ TRANSIT assets given climate change scenarios over different planning timeframes (5, 10, 20 and 50 years).

Preparing for Tomorrow’s High Tide: Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment for the State of Delaware – Transportation Infrastructure

July 2012

This Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment describes and quantifies impacts of sea-level rise (SLR) on 79 resources in Delaware, including transportation resources. The Assessment discusses projections of SLR for Delaware, defines the method used to determine potential vulnerability to SLR, and provides analysis of each resource category. Among these resources, the Assessment addresses Delaware’s transportation infrastructure, including railroad lines, roads and bridges, and the Port of Wilmington.

Tracking the Effects of Sea Level Rise in Georgia's Coastal Communities

December 14, 2012

This report focuses on the sea level rise impacts as well as adaptation opportunities for three counties along the Georgia coast (Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh).  The result of a semester-long graduate planning studio at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the project's goal is to provide residents, decision-makers, and researchers with information that can help to proactively plan for future sea level rise (SLR).

Preparing for Tomorrow's High Tide: Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment for the State of Delaware

July 2012

Delaware’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee (SLRAC) was established by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), to help the state plan for sea level rise. The SLRAC is assessing Delaware’s vulnerability to current and future inundation problems that may be exacerbated by sea level rise. Their goal is to develop a set of recommendations for state agencies, local governments, businesses, and citizens to enable them to adapt programs, policies, business practices and make informed decisions.

City of Flagstaff, Arizona Resiliency and Preparedness Study

September 2012

The City of Flagstaff, Arizona completed a study that assesses 115 of the City’s critical operations that have been impacted by climate. Conducted by a team of City staff and regional partners (the "Core Team"), the study recommends an overarching policy aimed to increase protection and resilience within municipal operations to hazards - including fire, severe winter storms, drought, floods, and more.

Hampton Roads Climate Change Adaptation Project

July 2012

Hampton Roads, Virginia engaged in a three-phase Climate Change Adaptation Project to identify impacts, assess the region’s vulnerabilities, and identify potential strategies for adapting to anticipated impacts. Part of the assessment focused on impacts to transportation infrastructure, although transportation impacts were only one issue of many analyzed in the three reports.
