Pennsylvania Final Climate Change Action Plan

From Pennsylvania's Climate Change Action Committee, this plan identifies 52 specific recommendations for Pennsylvania and the federal government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Actions taken by the state to address climate mitigation as of 2009 are detailed. The plan's chapters are organized by sector including: electricity generation, transmission & distribution; residential and commercial; land use and transportation; industry; waste; agriculture; forestry; and macroeconomic assessment.

California 2009 Climate Adaptation Strategy

2009

The state of California produced this cross-agency, multi-sector strategy in late 2009, to help guide California's efforts in adapting to climate change impacts. The California Climate Adaptation Strategy, directed by Executive Order S-13-08, was developed by five state agencies and nine departments to plan for sea-level rise and other impacts.

California Climate Adaptation Strategy - Energy and Transportation Infrastructure

December 2009

Chapter X of the 2009 California Climate Adaptation Strategy (CAS) summarizes projected climate change impacts to transportation and energy infrastructure in the state, and recommends adaptation strategies to address those impacts. California’s extensive infrastructure system will likely be subject to climate change-related impacts from higher temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, sea-level rise, and extreme weather events. To adapt to these impacts, the CAS recommends four adaptation strategies for transportation infrastructure: develop a climate vulnerability assessment; incorporate climate change into existing investment decisions; develop design standards to minimize risks; and incorporate climate change considerations into disaster preparedness planning.

This Environmental Action Plan (EAP) was developed by Eco-City Alexandria, a strategic collaborative planning process designed by the City of Alexandria, Virginia, in partnership with Virginia Tech's Department of Urban Affairs and Planning. The EAP merges short-term goals and action steps (FY-2009-2011) approved by the City Council in January 2009, with new mid- and long-range goals and actions (2012-2030).

USGCRP Global Climate Change Impacts in the US - Transportation

This report is one of seven sector-specific chapters from the United States Global Change Research Program's 2009 National Climate Assessment, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the U. S. "  The 'Transportation' chapter presents current and projected impacts to the U. S. transportation system from climate change. Primarily the effects of climate change on infrastructure, such as highways, air strips, and port facilities, are described in detail. Regional case studies demonstrating these types of impacts from extreme weather events in the recent past are included.

The Impacts of Sea-Level Rise on the California Coast

May 2009

Provided by the California Energy Commission's Climate Change Center, this study includes a detailed analysis of California's infrastructure, property, and current population at risk from projected sea-level rise, as well as the cost of building structural measures to reduce that risk. Specifically, it identifies the risks of flooding and erosion to specific populations, roads, railways, power plants, water treatment plants, ports and airports, emergency and healthcare facilities, wetlands, coastal and San Francisco Bay properties, and groundwater aquifers.

Greenworks Philadelphia Plan - Transportation Recommendations

2009

Greenworks Philadelphia is a comprehensive six-year plan (“Plan”) that sets goals for “greening” the City of Philadelphia – increasing the city’s energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the environmental quality of the city, and adapting to the dangers posed by climate change. This case study focuses only on the transportation-related recommendations included in the Plan – increasing the percentage of city assets in a “state of good repair” and using green infrastructure strategies to improve stormwater management and reduce flood impacts to transportation infrastructure.

Maine's Climate Future: An Initial Assessment

April 2009

In late 2007, then Governor Baldacci asked the University of Maine and its Climate Change Institute to lead a preliminary analysis of the effects of climate change in Maine during the 21st century. This report from the analysis considers past climate change, recent evidence of accelerated rates of change, and the implications of continued climate change in Maine as a result of greenhouse gas emissions and their associated pollutants. The assessment highlights some of the critical climate impacts on various ecosystems and economic sectors in Maine, with the intention to help frame the policy and management discussions on adaptation that are needed, while emphasizing new opportunities that exist for the state.
