Post Hurricane Sandy Transportation Resilience Study in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut

October 2017

The Federal Highway Administration led a Hurricane Sandy Resiliency Study to inform ways to improve resilience of the tri-state New York - New Jersey - Connecticut region's transportation system and to inform disaster recovery efforts. The study, which began in 2013 and was completed in late 2017, involved a detailed assessment of the impacts and disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy as well as from several other extreme weather events occurring in the area in 2011, and analyzed vulnerability and risk to the tri-state transportation system at three different scales: regional (entire study area), subarea (corridor/small network), and facility.

Seattle, Washington Climate Preparedness Strategy

August 2017

The Seattle Climate Preparedness Strategy presents a plan to improve the resilience of the city’s infrastructure and services to climate change. Seattle’s overarching climate resilience vision is to reduce emissions and prepare for climate-related impacts while building vibrant neighborhoods, fostering economic prosperity, and enhancing equity. The strategy considers climate change’s impacts on many of Seattle’s public sectors, and suggests strategies for the city to reduce or eliminate those impacts in each sector.

Planning for Climate Resilience City of Asheville, North Carolina: Phase I Assessment

The City of Asheville, North Carolina has identified climate-relate threats and hazards in this assessment to inform Asheville's climate resiliency planning efforts. The city used the information from the Assessment in updating its comprehensive plan, "Living Asheville," which was adopted in June 2018.

Resilient Edgemere, New York City, Community Plan

2017

The Resilient Edgemere Community Plan is a long term plan for social and climate resilience for the coastal community of Edgemere in New York City (NYC), New York. After Hurricane Sandy, the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development launched the Resilient Edgemere Community Planning Initiative in 2015. Edgemere is a low-lying waterfront community located on a barrier island (the Rockaways) that continues to recover from Sandy, while increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as intensified coastal storms and sea-level rise.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Resilience Strategy

March 2017

The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania released its Resilience Strategy in March 2017 to provide a holistic strategy for helping the city to manage challenges from a changing environment, globalization, and urbanization. The Strategy sets goals, objectives, and action organized around a “P4” community-centered framework addressing resilience in terms of People, Place, Planet, and Performance.  The Strategy is intended to be a blueprint to help the city prepare for resilience challenges by helping the city improve coordination among government and non-governmental organizations, improve budgeting and capital coordination citywide, ensure the institutionalization of resilience practices, and increase resident engagement and empowerment. Development of this plan was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities initiative.

A Greater LA: Climate Action Framework - Transportation and Land Use

December 2016

The Transportation and Land Use section of Los Angeles County, California's Climate Action Framework (A Greater LA) identifies regional-scale priorities for the County region to reduce emissions and improve public health, air quality, and climate resilience through transportation and land use decisions. The Framework, which also contains sections for four other sectors, was developed by the Los Angeles Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC) to support more coordinated and collaborative regional policies relating to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Climate Ready Boston Final Report (2016)

December 8, 2016

Climate Ready Boston is an initiative to enhance near- and long-term climate change preparedness and resiliency in Boston, Massachusetts. The comprehensive 400-page final report from the initiative uses updated climate projections to predict how climate change will impact Boston, and details the findings on vulnerable populations, buildings, infrastructure, the shoreline, and the economy. The report also provides an extensive analysis of climate resilience initiatives and a roadmap for strategic implementation.

Let’s Keep Moving 2036 - Alaska Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan

From the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Let’s Keep Moving 2036 provides the overall policy guidance for regional and area planning of long-range transportation (highways, aviation, transit, rail, marine, bicycle, and pedestrian) in the state of Alaska. The plan includes goals, policies, and actions which inform statewide transportation programs and investments through the year 2036. It is based on technical analyses of four key trends, including climate change, that will have the greatest effect on the transportation system - which represents the government’s largest capital investment in the state.

Rhode Island: Vulnerability of Municipal Transportation Assets to Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge

September 28, 2016

From Rhode Island’s Statewide Planning Program, Technical Paper 167: “Vulnerability of Municipal Transportation Assets to Sea Level Rise and Storm Surge” analyzes the estimated geographic extent of sea level rise in relation to transportation infrastructure in the state over the next century. The study found that sea level rise presents a major challenge to Rhode Island’s transportation infrastructure, both via daily tidal flooding of coastal assets, and in making storm surge events more severe.
