Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a public domain model jointly developed by USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and Texas A&M AgriLife Research, part of the Texas A&M University System. SWAT is a small watershed to river basin-scale model to simulate the quality and quantity of surface and ground water and predict the environmental impact of land use, land management practices, and climate change.

Streamflow Projections for the Western United States

May 16, 2012

The resource provides streamflow and water supply data for 195 sites in the Western United States in the form of an interactive map. These data are based on hydrologic projections at a 12 kilometer resolution covering western states. High-resolution climate/hydrologic variations and changes are depicted through global climate simulations and then downscaled. Projections for each site run from the year 1950 through 2099.

BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Non-point Sources)

2013

BASINS is a multi-purpose environmental analysis system that integrates a geographical information system (GIS), national watershed data, and state-of-the-art environmental assessment and modeling tools into one tool. Developed for use by EPA, state, tribal, and local agencies, BASINS provides an integrated watershed assessment and modeling framework, and supports the analysis of point and non-point source management alternatives. The Climate Assessment Tool within BASINS assesses potential impacts of a changing climate on stream flows and pollutant loads.

Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model (DHSVM)

February 2013

DHSVM is a distributed hydrologic model that explicitly represents the effects of topography and vegetation on water fluxes through the landscape. DHSVM has been applied both operationally, for streamflow prediction, and in a research capacity, to examine the effects of forest management on peak streamflow, among other things. The website is maintained to disseminate the open-source model, provide examples of model applications, and enable global use of the model to study the impacts of climate change, land use change, forest management practices, flooding, stream temperature and quality.

Landsat Project

As a joint initiative between the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) and NASA, the Landsat Project provides repetitive acquisition of high resolution multispectral data of the Earth's surface on a global basis. The data from the Landsat spacecraft constitute the longest record of the Earth's continental surfaces as seen from space.   Today's use of Landsat data has evolved, becoming not only a fundamental data source for addressing basic science questions but also has come into its own as a valuable resource for decision makers in such diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, land use, water resources and natural resource exploration.

Stormwater Management Toolkit: Urban Watershed Planning Game

June 1, 2013

As part of the Stormwater Management Toolkit, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) developed the Urban Watershed Planning Game. This game helps the SFPUC understand community priorities by presenting a diverse group of community members with the task of updating San Francisco’s sewer system. The game fosters the development of green infrastructure solutions that help San Francisco adapt to the impacts of climate change in a financially feasible, community driven manner.  This game is a great resource for city planners, watershed managers, public engagement officers, and citizens.

Assessing the Vulnerability of Watersheds to Climate Change

July 2013

The US Forest Service (USFS) Watershed Vulnerability Assessment (WVA) project developed an approach to assessing the vulnerability of water resources in a watershed to projected climate-hydrologic changes. The WVA project was conducted by watershed and aquatic specialists from 11 National Forests across the country representing all nine Forest Service regions. Based on the lessons learned from the pilot projects, this summary report provides guidance on the process of conducting such an assessment, with supporting information for all the key stages of the process.

Green Values - National Stormwater Management Calculator

The National Stormwater Management Calculator is one tool found in the “Green Values” Stormwater Toolbox developed by the Center for Neighborhood Technology. The National Green Values Calculator (GVC) is focused on stormwater run-off reduction, and is a tool for comparing the performance, costs, and benefits of green infrastructure, or Low Impact Development (LID), to conventional stormwater practices. The GVC is meant for a single site, or a campus of buildings contained on a single site.

Sierra Climate Change Toolkit - 3rd Edition

2014

The Sierra Climate Change toolkit addresses climate change across the Sierra Nevada region of California, with localized strategies for emissions reductions and adaptation. The report describes climate change impacts in the Sierra, as well as recent regulations, policy directions, and incentives to reduce emissions and adapt. Adaptation strategies are outlined for water and watershed management, wildlife and habitats, forestry, wildfire, and City and County land-use planning. This 3rd edition from the Sierra Nevada Alliance expands its focus from previous versions with more strategic detail, case studies and further support for the development of an adaptation framework that works within existing planning processes throughout the Sierra.
