New York’s Expanded USGS StreamStats Tool

December 2015

The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a web-based application that operates in conjunction with the existing StreamStats application for New York State to incorporate projected precipitation changes under various 21st century climate change scenarios. This application will allow transportation planners and engineers to explore how climate change may affect high flows, which can assist with the design of over-water infrastructure (such as culverts and bridges) to accommodate these changes.

Adaptation to Natural Hazards and Climate Change in North Kingstown, Rhode Island

August 2015

This report was developed to help Rhode Island local governments assess vulnerabilities to natural hazards, such as sea-level rise and coastal flooding, and prepare implementable coastal adaptation strategies. Strategies derived from this process can be included in local planning documents, and used to prioritize adaptation investments through local transportation and capital improvement programs. The stepwise approach described in the report was piloted in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and is intended to provide a model for other municipalities in the state.

State of the Climate 2014

The "State of the Climate" is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. An international, peer-reviewed publication released each summer, it provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events, and other data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments located on land, water, ice, and in space. The State of the Climate report is compiled by NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate at the National Centers for Environmental Information and is based on contributions from 413 scientists from 58 countries around the world.

Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tool (CREAT) Projected Scenarios

This website describes the scenarios used for the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tool (CREAT), a tool to help water and wastewater utilities prepare for climate change. The tool includes a map that shows projected climate change across the U. S. The map is separated into grids (roughly 32 x 32 miles). Each grid displays projections for annual total precipitation, annual average temperature, and precipitation intensity for the 100-year storm.

EPA Stormwater Management Model Climate Adjustment Tool

February 13, 2015

As part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan Climate Resilience Toolkit, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the Climate Adjustment Tool (CAT) for EPA’s Stormwater Management Model - a downloadable online stormwater simulation model. The Climate Adjustment Tool allows engineers and planners to evaluate the performance of water infrastructure while considering future climate change projections, such as more frequent high-intensity storms and changes in evaporation rates of seasonal precipitation.

Climate Interactive, Milwaukee Green Infrastructure Scenarios Tool

Climate Interactive, a “climate change think tank” has created a Green Infrastructure Scenarios Tool (GIST) for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that allows for scenario testing related green infrastructure investment and future precipitation scenarios. The simulation allows users to test investments into different types of infrastructure for managing stormwater, and supports exploration of different possible future rainfall patterns, to see how investments might turn out under various future climate conditions.

International Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database

Initiated by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1996 and now led by the Water Research Foundation since 2004, the International Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database contains a growing collection of BMP studies with metadata on site conditions, design parameters, and stormwater monitoring results. The database features hundreds of BMP studies, performance analysis methods and results, tools for performance studies and reporting, monitoring guidance, and other study-related publications.

Variable Infiltration Capacity Model (VIC) is a macro scale, semi-distributed hydrologic model that solves full water and energy balances, originally developed by Xu Liang at the University of Washington. VIC is a research model and in its various forms it has been applied to most of the major river basins around the world, as well as being applied globally.
