Adaptation Case Study and Information Exchange

Developed under the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Ready Water Utilities (CRWU) initiative, the Adaptation Case Study and Information Exchange is a website featuring climate change adaptation strategies that water sector utilities are deploying across the country. The website has an interactive map linking to case studies produced by the EPA. Each point on the map represents a drinking water, wastewater, or combined utility that provides the climate threats facing the utility, as well as the corresponding adaptation measures that the utility considered for implementation.

Adaptation to Natural Hazards and Climate Change in North Kingstown, Rhode Island

August 2015

This report was developed to help Rhode Island local governments assess vulnerabilities to natural hazards, such as sea-level rise and coastal flooding, and prepare implementable coastal adaptation strategies. Strategies derived from this process can be included in local planning documents, and used to prioritize adaptation investments through local transportation and capital improvement programs. The stepwise approach described in the report was piloted in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and is intended to provide a model for other municipalities in the state.

AgroClimate (SECC)

AgroClimate is an interactive website developed by the Southeast Climate Consortium (SECC) for use by farmers, ranchers, foresters, water resource managers, and those who advise them. The site uses crop simulation models and historic and forecast climate data to allow decision makers to compare changes in probable outcomes under different climate conditions.

Aquarius: A Modeling System for River Basin Water Allocation

Aquarius is a software application developed by the Rocky Mountain Research Station of the U. S Forest Service and Colorado State University. The modeling system depicts the temporal and spatial allocation of water flows among competing traditional and nontraditional water uses in a river basin. The program can be used to determine economically efficient water destination strategies by systematically examining, using a nonlinear optimization technique, the feasibility of reallocating unused or marginally valuable water storage and releases in favor of alternative uses.

Assessing Reservoir Operations Risk Under Climate Change

April 11, 2009

A collaborative effort of the Bureau of Reclamation, USGS, USACE, and the California Dept. of Water Resources, this paper presents a flexible methodology for conducting climate change risk assessments involving reservoir operations.   The risk-based framework described in this paper provides a new context for climate change assessments. It is a flexible framework that advances methods for assessing scenario-impacts and/or characterizing uncertainties about projection scenarios or associated impacts.

Assessing the Vulnerability of Watersheds to Climate Change

July 2013

The US Forest Service (USFS) Watershed Vulnerability Assessment (WVA) project developed an approach to assessing the vulnerability of water resources in a watershed to projected climate-hydrologic changes. The WVA project was conducted by watershed and aquatic specialists from 11 National Forests across the country representing all nine Forest Service regions. Based on the lessons learned from the pilot projects, this summary report provides guidance on the process of conducting such an assessment, with supporting information for all the key stages of the process.

BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Non-point Sources)

2013

BASINS is a multi-purpose environmental analysis system that integrates a geographical information system (GIS), national watershed data, and state-of-the-art environmental assessment and modeling tools into one tool. Developed for use by EPA, state, tribal, and local agencies, BASINS provides an integrated watershed assessment and modeling framework, and supports the analysis of point and non-point source management alternatives. The Climate Assessment Tool within BASINS assesses potential impacts of a changing climate on stream flows and pollutant loads.

Building Coast-Smart Communities

Building Coast-Smart Communities is a role play product developed by the state of Maryland and funded by NOAA. It was used by the state in a summit, attended by more than 170 mayors, county commissions, environmentalists, business leaders and Maryland state officials, to discuss the State's climate change adaptation options. The half day role play quickly introduces people to the challenges faced by coastal communities and the primary options for addressing them. As such, local government authorities, planning departments, chambers of commerce, civic groups and residents associations can conduct this role play in their communities.
