National Farmers Union Climate Leaders

The National Farmers Union (NFU) Climate Leaders is a community of farmers, ranchers, educators, policy makers, journalists and citizens that are focusing on the threats posed to agriculture and food security by climate change, and finding collective solutions. The union Climate Leaders intend to spread awareness about climate change impacts on farmers, what they need to know and what they can do about climate change. The mission of the NFU is to advocate for the economic and social well-being, and quality of life of family farmers, ranchers, fishermen and consumers and their communities through education, cooperation and legislation.

The Climate Leaders site provides resources from top organizations and institutions studying the effects and solutions to climate change, as well as a Climate Column with the latest farming and climate news and viewpoints from NFU.

To support climate adaptation in rural farming practices, NFU plans to help educate family farmers, ranchers and rural communities about how to adapt to the effects climate change on their respective operations, as well as the economic benefits that homegrown renewable energy brings to rural areas. NFU Climate Leaders also plan to support efforts for the advancement of carbon storage in the soils of family farmers, ranchers, and agro-foresters, and promoting new agriculture-based markets that reward those that practice and implement conservation techniques scientifically proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

NFU represents family farmers, fishers and ranchers across the country, with formally organized divisions in 33 states. According to NFU, the key to the success and credibility of the organization has been Farmers Union’s grassroots structure in which policy positions are initiated locally. The policy process includes the presentation of resolutions by individuals, followed by possible adoption of the resolutions at the local, state and national levels. Members and staff of the Farmers Union advocate these policy positions nationwide.
