New York State Office of Climate Change
The New York State Office of Climate Change was proposed by Governor Spitzer and approved by the state's legislature to lead the development of programs and policies that mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and help New York communities and individuals adapt to impacts from a changing climate.
The Office is organized into three sections:
The Mitigation and Technical Analysis section designs solutions that will help stabilize atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at acceptable levels, supports the creation of new regulations, and contributes to state energy and climate mitigation planning.
The Adaptation and Communications division develops solutions to help New York respond to the impacts of climate change, contributes to state climate adaptation and resilience planning, conducts agency vulnerability assessments, coordinates adaptation collaborations and spearheads communication about climate change science and policies.
The Municipal Support section works to inform, assist and empower local governments to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to unavoidable impacts. The section manages the Climate Smart Communities certification program and Climate Smart Communities grants program.
