North American Bird Conservation Initiative, U.S. Committee (NABCI)

The U.S. North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) is a forum of government agencies, private organizations, and bird initiatives helping federal, state, and nongovernmental organizations across the continent to meet their common bird conservation objectives. NABCI fosters collaboration on key issues of concern, including bird monitoring, conservation design, private lands, international objectives, and state and federal agency support for integrated bird conservation. NABCI's goal is to deliver the full spectrum of bird conservation through regionally based, biologically driven, landscape-oriented partnerships - to secure the future for North America's more than 1,150 species of birds.

Since bird populations respond throughout their ranges to variations in landscape-level conditions, bird conservation must be delivered in the context of achieving a pre-established design of landscape sustainability.  The U.S. NABCI Committee and subcommittees provide forums for developing a common biological framework for conservation planning, design, and delivery; and for working together through the challenges presented by conserving birds on a landscape scale - among other cooperative and adaptive conservation planning activities.

The State of the Birds report is produced annually by NABCI.  "State of the Birds 2010" was focused on climate change impacts on the avian populations and habitats.  As climate change is altering the natural world and diminishing the quality of our environment, birds, other wildlife along with human and societal wellbeing are equally threatened.  Visit  'State of the Birds 2010', and 'State of the Birds 2011' - also entries in this database -  for further information.
