Old Dominion University Resilience Collaborative

Old Dominion University (ODU)’s Resilience Collaborative is a consortium of leading scholars actively engaged in research, education, and outreach on critical issues for resilience at the community, regional, national, and global levels. The Collaborative’s focal research areas include climate change and sea level rise, adaptation, cybersecurity, health, and community resilience.

The Collaborative replaces the now defunct Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative that was established in in 2010 to focus on sea level rise and other climate related threats to coastal communities. In 2014 that Initiative was responsible for establishing the Mitigation and Adaptation Research Institute (MARI) at ODU which convenes stakeholders, researches climate change, and develop relevant knowledge and tools for mitigation and adaptation.

The Resilience Collaborative connects ODU faculty with MARI projects and the Commonwealth Center for Recurrent Flooding Resilience. This Center is a more recent project and a collaboration between ODU, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and the College of William & Mary as they work to:

  • Provide scientific and technical support for the Commonwealth and its agencies, localities, and other stakeholders as they work to become more resilient to recurrent flooding
  • Integrate and coordinate data, best practices, and interventions between federal, state, local, and nongovernmental organizations.
  • Support efforts to leverage data and funding opportunities and lead funding applications on behalf of the Commonwealth
