The College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) at Oregon State University is one of the leading oceanic and atmospheric sciences institutions in the nation. Seventy-five teaching and research faculty work with 80 research associates, recent Ph.D. recipients (postdocs) and faculty assistants, while engaging 100 graduate students in master’s and Ph.D. programs. Interdisciplinary research at COAS includes the study of climate change and global warming, Earth systems, the Arctic, tsunamis, earthquakes, the North Pole, pollution, weather, clouds and haze, life on Mars, hydrothermal vents, geophysics, near shore dynamics, ocean observing and many other activities associated with oceanography and the atmosphere.
The College's Micrometeorological studies address problems of climate variation in complex terrain ( the Biomicrometeorology Group), and the Climate Dynamics and Energy Feedback Group studies physical processes that amplify or reduce climate change effects. Based within COAS, the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (see separate entry in this clearinghouse) - a network of over 100 researchers at OSU, the University of Oregon, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, and affiliated federal and state labs - provides climate information to decision makers throughout Oregon.
