Sonoran Institute

The nonprofit Sonoran Institute, founded in 1990, works across the rapidly changing West to conserve and restore natural and cultural assets and to promote better management of growth and change. The Institute's community-based approach emphasizes collaboration, civil dialogue, sound information, local knowledge, practical solutions and big-picture thinking.

The Sonoran Institute is working to help western communities reduce and adapt to climate change impacts. They offer information and tools for local and regional decision-makers to better integrate climate change strategies into planning and land management efforts. The Institute is planning research on the potential economic costs of various actions (or inaction) on climate change in the West, urban heat island issues in Western cities, implementing state climate action plans at the community level, and strengthening land use planning and transportation aspects of state climate action plans.
