USGS National Wildlife Health Center
The National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) is a science center within the United States Geological Survey (USGS), dedicated to assessing the impact of disease on wildlife and to identifying the role of various pathogens in contributing to wildlife losses. With climate change, the distribution and incidence of diseases and pathogens, such as lyme disease and west nile virus, are projected to grow.
The Center monitors diseases and assesses the impacts of diseases on wildlife populations; defines ecological relationships leading to the occurrence of disease; transfers technology for disease prevention and control; and provides guidance, training and on-site assistance for reducing wildlife losses when outbreaks occur. The Center's publications include studies on the effects of climate change on wildlife, domestic animals, and human diseases.
