Charting New Waters: A Call to Action to Address U.S. Freshwater Challenges

Based upon freshwater forums in the proceeding year, The Johnson Foundation Freshwater Summit was held June 9, 2010, at which leaders from business, non-governmental organizations, agriculture, academia, government, foundations and communities convened to develop a set of consensus recommendations to address U.S. freshwater challenges.

This report is an outline of the vision, principles, and recommendations developed at the summit. Key recommendations include freshwater management strategies designed to prepare for water scarcity and diminished water quality. Topics include governance, coordination, regulatory tools, water efficiency strategies, science and data, long-range planning and management, economics (cost of water) and infrastructure investments, public education, and ecosystem services markets.
