Climate Smart Cities: Decision support tools for climate change planning
The Trust for Public Land researched the current state of decision support tools being used for climate change planning, along with the needs of potential users within municipal governments and partner organizations for these types of tools. The report summarizes findings on tool availability and function, the readiness of cities for tool use, their capacity and capabilities, the availability of data for planning, and some cases of translating results to action. Appendix B provides a comprehensive list of 50 web-based publicly available decision support tools that could be useful for climate adaptation planning and development.
This study found that the value of climate change decision support tools can be much greater than the data and technical capabilities - and the report further details the need and application of these tools. Conceivably, mitigating and adapting to climate change will require sharing information and collaborating on solutions at every level - which necessitates the web-based decision support tool. These tools can promote coordination and collaboration across city departments, organizations, sectors, jurisdictions, regions and countries.
