Preparing for Tomorrow's High Tide: Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment for the State of Delaware

Delaware’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee (SLRAC) was established by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), to help the state plan for sea level rise. The SLRAC is assessing Delaware’s vulnerability to current and future inundation problems that may be exacerbated by sea level rise. Their goal is to develop a set of recommendations for state agencies, local governments, businesses, and citizens to enable them to adapt programs, policies, business practices and make informed decisions.

City of Santa Barbara, California Sea-Level Rise Vulnerability Study
July 2012
This study assesses the vulnerability of the City of Santa Barbara to future sea. level rise and related coastal hazards (by 2050 and 2100). It also evaluates the likely impacts of coastal hazards to specific areas of the City, analyzes their risks and the City’s ability to respond, and recommends potential adaptation responses. This white paper was prepared by the University of California, Santa Cruz - which is a part of a larger study funded by the Public Interest Environmental Research Program of the California Energy Commission.

Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present and Future
June 2012
This study provides the first comprehensive regional projections of the changes in sea level expected in California, Oregon, and Washington - posing serious risks to the infrastructure, development, and wetlands along this 1,600 mile shoreline. California Executive Order S-13-08 directed state agencies to plan for sea-level rise and coastal impacts, and asked the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies to establish a committee to assess sea-level rise. Oregon, Washington, and several federal agencies joined California to sponsor the study.

Protecting the Public Interest through the National Coastal Zone Management Program: How Coastal States and Territories Use No-Build Areas along Ocean and Great Lake Shorefronts

This report provides an overview of policy options for limiting new construction in vulnerable coastal areas, and a summary of existing laws and regulations in states with federally approved coastal management programs (CMPs). To better understand and communicate how state CMPs manage ocean and Great Lake shorefront development, NOAA’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) (now a part of the Office for Coastal Management) conducted this study to look specifically at where states are employing shorefront strategies to protect the public interest and natural resources.

Florida's Community Resilience Initiative - Planning for Sea Level Rise
2012
In January 2011, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) approved the Florida Coastal Management Program’s (FCMP) Section 309 Strategy, including an initiative to be conducted by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) titled, “Community Resiliency: Planning for Sea Level Rise. ” This five-year initiative is examining the statewide planning framework and determining how to best integrate adaptation into the existing process as well as how to coordinate adaptation efforts across Florida.

Deal Island Peninsula Project
2012
The Deal Island Peninsula, in Maryland, is vulnerable to flooding, erosion, storm surge, and changing sea levels. Beginning in 2012, federal, state, and university funding has supported a collaborative effort to strengthen the ability of local communities to adapt to these changing conditions. Many residents in Deal Island identify strongly with the "watermen" lifestyle, relying on harvesting crab, oyster, and fish for their livelihood and supporting cultural traditions. This project aims to bring together community members, researchers, and environmental managers to learn from one another and support strategic adaptation plans.

Development of a Methodology for the Assessment of Sea Level Rise Impacts on Florida’s Transportation Modes and Infrastructure

This report provides a methodology for assessing the impacts of sea-level rise (SLR) on Florida transportation infrastructure. The report analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of forecasting SLR in Florida and provides recommendations for how those methods should be used by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The report also provides recommendations for identifying vulnerable transportation assets and addressing potential impacts of SLR to those assets. After this methodology was developed, FDOT funded a subsequent project to develop a GIS-based planning tool that aids in statewide and regional assessments of transportation asset vulnerability to SLR.

USGS Coastal Change Hazards Portal
2012
The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) created this online tool - the USGS Coastal Change Hazards Portal - that provides an interactive view of past, present and future hazards along the U. S. coasts. A user can choose any coastal location, zoom in to a relatively local level, and view potential impacts from extreme storms, historic shoreline changes, and coastal vulnerability to sea-level rise. USGS suggests that this tool can aid in decisions that involve emergency preparedness, ecosystem restoration, and where and how to develop coastal areas.

St. Bernard Parish Coastal Zone Management Program

This document updates the Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP) of St. Bernard Parish, outlining a plan to guide coastal development with restoration and protection, incorporating sea level rise planning for the Parish. The original CZMP was created in 1982 and has been a working program since its official approval in 1987. The program is subject to two year periodic review by the Louisiana Office of Coastal Management.

'Adapting to Sea Level Rise: A Guide for California’s Coastal Communities' was created to serve as a guide for California’s coastal managers and community planners to develop adaptation plans for sea level rise (SLR) that are suited to their local conditions and communities. The guide begins with background information about climate change and SLR, and an explanation of why planners in coastal communities should begin to plan for SLR and the associated coastal hazards. The remaining sections describe the processes of performing SLR vulnerability assessments and risk analysis for the development of adaptation plans that can be tailored specifically to individual communities.
