Climate Action Plan: Interim Report to the Governor and the Maryland General Assembly

January 14, 2008

The Maryland Commission on Climate Change's Interim Report includes timetables and benchmarks for reducing Maryland’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and preliminary recommendations for legislation and executive actions. It also includes general support for legislative or other actions on adaptation and mitigation initiatives. The Report contains a list of approximately 50 priority policy options the Commission has chosen for more detailed analysis.

Sea Level Rise in the Coastal Waters of Washington State

January 2008

This scientific analysis provides low, medium, and high estimates of sea-level rise for the Northwest Olympic Peninsula, Central and Southern Coasts, and Puget Sound areas for 2050 and 2100, to support both public and private investment and other decision making. The authors examine four key factors that influence local SLR, including thermal expansion of the ocean, melting land ice, local winds, and local land changes (e. g. from tectonic movement and isostatic rebound), to calculate these projections.

Massachusetts StormSmart Coasts Program

2008

StormSmart Coasts is a program for coastal management decision makers and communities, providing the latest and best information on coastal weather and climate hazards. The successful launch of the Massachusetts StormSmart Coasts initiative in 2008 led to the development of a national network in 2009. The network is a partnership of coastal decision makers supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center, Northeast Regional Ocean Council, Gulf of Mexico Alliance, and others which represent the StormSmart Coasts Network.

Assessment of Redefining Florida's Coastal High Hazard Area

January 2008

This report examines how a 2006 legislative change to Coastal High Hazard Area (CHHA) policies of HB 1359 changed the CHHA boundaries and may compromise resiliency and land development in Florida's coastal communities, particularly in light of concerns regarding climate change and sea-level rise.

A Discussion of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on the Shorelines of the Northeastern USA

July 10, 2007

This report, prepared for the 2007 Northeast Climate Impact Assessment (see separate entry), provides a broad overview of how sea-level rise will impact the coast of the northeastern United States. Different possible rates of sea-level rise and the primary impact of shoreline retreat is discussed. The report explains how local features determine the extent of shoreline retreat in a given area and addresses how sea-level rise could affect different ecosystems, including estuaries, salt marshes, and barrier island systems.

Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Habitats in the Pacific Northwest: An Analysis for Puget Sound, Southwestern Washington, and Northwestern Oregon

July 2007

This report, by the National Wildlife Federation, documents results from a study on the projected impacts of sea-level rise to key coastal habitats in the Pacific Northwest. The study modeled sea-level rise up to 2 meters, based on input from prior studies, and examined its effects including the inundation of estuarine beaches, loss of tidal flats and marshes, and the inundation of inland swamps. The report also provides a brief description of how these effects will impact wildlife. Finally, the report makes one broad recommendation for planners to account for sea-level rise in their habitat restoration projects.

Vulnerability of New Jersey's Coastal Habitats to Sea Level Rise

January 2007

This report is the product of a study determining which developed areas in coastal New Jersey are vulnerable to sea-level rise in ways that could negatively impact sandy beach and wetland habitats. It is intended to be used in a way that can provide information for coastal management and development decisions.

Sea Level Rise in the Tampa Bay Region

August 14, 2006

The Tampa Bay region on the west coast of Florida has nearly 700 miles of shoreline susceptible to climate accelerated sea level rise. This draft report provides an overview of the sea level rise projections as understood in 2006, and describes federal, state and local level policies that relate to sea level rise planning. Maps were developed for each of the region’s four counties to demonstrate potential sea level rise projections, along with wetland mapping and “protection scenarios” delineating the likelihood of structural defensive measures (hard or soft) for the remaining coastline.

East Hampton, New York Coastal Erosion Overlay District

July 2006

Adopted by the Town of East Hampton, New York in 2006, this ordinance (Town of East Hampton Code, Section 255-3-80) includes provisions, among others, to create a Coastal Erosion Overlay District to protect the town's coastline from the effects of coastal erosion measures (i. e. , projects designed to control or prevent coastal flooding and erosion and adjacent upland areas, including coastal ecosystems) in areas at risk of flooding and erosion. The town's natural resources include wetlands, watercourses, tidal waters, natural drainage areas, watersheds, and water recharge areas, as well as beaches, dunes, bluffs, and other coastal features.
