U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Climate Adaptation Plan

As part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, Federal agencies released their agency Sustainability Plans and Climate Change Adaptation Plans on October 31, 2014. The agencies were directed to assess their vulnerabilities to climate change impacts in these plans, and to outline how they will protect Federal programs, assets and investments. The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Climate Adaptation Plan commits HHS to preparing for the challenges posed by climate change by leading the way on implementation of sustainable operations, promoting climate-resilient health and human services, supporting scientific research focused on the effects of climate change on human health and well-being, as well as developing effective risk reduction and adaptation measures.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Change Adaptation Plan
October 31, 2014
On October 31, 2014, EPA released the final versions of its Agency-wide Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the 17 Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plans produced by the Program and Regional Offices. The EPA Adaptation Plan identifies vulnerabilities to EPA’s mission and goals from climate change, and presents priority actions the Agency will take to incorporate considerations of climate change into its programs, policies, rules and operations to ensure they are effective under future climatic conditions.

Maryland State Highway Administration Climate Change Adaptation Plan with Detailed Vulnerability Assessment

Maryland’s State Highway Administration (SHA) carried out a vulnerability assessment to inform future policy and engineering approaches to manage climate induced risks. The vulnerability assessment focused on two Maryland counties, Anne Arundel and Somerset, as part of a larger pilot project funded by the Federal Highway Administration. The report aims to improve the SHA’s understanding of climate vulnerability and allow for the development, assessment, and implementation of strategies to protect transportation assets.

New Hampshire Drinking Water Climate Change Resilience Plan
October 2014
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services’ Drinking Water and Groundwater Bureau (DWGB) developed this action plan to guide the Bureau’s activities in building resilience to climate change impacts in community water systems across the state. The plan identifies examples of adaptation measures for community water systems as well as priority action items DWGB will take with regard to policies, operations, regulations, education/outreach, and technical assistance to help drinking water systems prepare for and respond to climate impacts.

The report summarizes green infrastructure approaches for stormwater, and the integration process into planning for and developing sustainable communities. The guide is designed to help stakeholders understand how green infrastructure can enhance their communities, and to develop a plan that can overcome technical, regulatory, financial, and institutional obstacles that can limit the implementation of green infrastructure.

U.S. Department of Defense 2014 Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap

The Department of Defense (Department, DoD) recognizes that climate change will affect their ability to defend the Nation and poses immediate risks to U.S. national security, and has developed the Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap representing the Department’s climate adaptation activities and strategies in response to these impacts. The 2014 report builds upon and updates the original 2012 DoD Adaptation Roadmap.

City of Portland and Multnomah County, Oregon Climate Change Preparation Strategy

Portland and Multnomah County, Oregon have documented their process of climate change preparation for the region, which has been published in two parts - the Climate Change Preparation Strategy and the Risk and Vulnerabilities Assessment report. The Preparation Strategy is based on the assessment, and identifies priority actions to prepare for climate impacts in the areas of policy development, operations, planning, human services, as well as infrastructure and natural resource management. The strategy focuses on climate impacts for the City and County while taking an adaptive management approach that can improve resilience to current natural hazards, while also reducing exposure to future climate risks.
