Seattle, Washington Climate Preparedness Strategy

The Seattle Climate Preparedness Strategy presents a plan to improve the resilience of the city’s infrastructure and services to climate change. Seattle’s overarching climate resilience vision is to reduce emissions and prepare for climate-related impacts while building vibrant neighborhoods, fostering economic prosperity, and enhancing equity. The strategy considers climate change’s impacts on many of Seattle’s public sectors, and suggests strategies for the city to reduce or eliminate those impacts in each sector.

Resilience Dividend Valuation Model: Framework Development and Initial Case Studies

This paper summarizes a framework developed by the RAND Corporation and the Rockefeller Foundation for valuing the benefits of an adaptation intervention. The framework is meant to allow practitioners to compare options and assess the value of policies more comprehensively than is possible using indices or scorecards. The paper outlines the technical elements of the “Resilience Dividend Valuation Model (RDVM)” and concludes with examples of how the model was applied in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam, and the United States.

California General Plan Guidelines
August 2017
The California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) has completed the first comprehensive update to the State General Plan Guidelines since 2003. The Guidelines are for the preparation and content of general plans for all cities and counties in California. The 2017 version includes legislative changes, new guidance, policy recommendations, and the requirement to incorporate climate change into community planning.

In August 2017, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released the report, The Use of Cooling Centers to Prevent Heat-Related Illness: Summary of Evidence and Strategies for Implementation, which summarizes the effectiveness of cooling centers through concentrating on relevant peer-reviewed sources. After analyzing this peer-reviewed literature and examples of best practices, the document lays out the steps a health department or other applicable organizations or agencies can take to implement a cooling center.

NYC Municipal Water Efficiency Program: Timed Spray Showers
August 21, 2017
NYC Municipal Water Efficiency Program: Timed Spray Showers: The New York City Departments of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Parks and Recreation installed water-saving automatic shut-off timers and activation buttons on 400 spray showers at City playgrounds in order to conserve water by ensuring that showers are activated only when in use. The $3 million initiative, funded by DEP and jointly managed through a partnership with NYC Parks, is part of a larger citywide effort to reduce water consumption by 5 percent.

Flooding Threatens Public Schools Across the Country: Infrastructure analysis evaluates county-level flood risk
August 2017
From the Pew Charitable Trusts and ICF, this analysis of flooding risk was conducted for public elementary and secondary schools in all 50 states. Three county-level indicators were developed to assess flooding risk including: a school’s location within a designated flood zone, the percentage of a school’s neighborhood (as represented by ZIP code) located within a flood zone, and the number of historical flood-related federal disaster declarations in that county.

Washington State DOT - Guidance for Considering Impacts of Climate Change in WSDOT Plans

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) developed this guidance to assist the department's planners with integrating climate change considerations in planning processes in order to build greater resilience of the state's transportation system. The guidance helps implement Strategy 3. 2 of the department's strategic plan, Results WSDOT, which states that "WSDOT’s plans and projects undergoing environmental review, will document how climate change and extreme weather vulnerability are considered, and propose ways to improve resilience.

Cities Taking Action: How the 100RC Network is Building Urban Resilience

Developed by the Rockefeller Foundation, 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) is a non-profit dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to climate change and other compounding stressors (e. g. high unemployment, aging infrastructure, social inequality). This report describes seven projects that exemplify urban resilience strategies supported by 100RC, and highlights 33 additional projects across 25 more member cities worldwide which are working on similar resilience challenges.
