Analysis of Drought Impacts on Electricity Production in the Western and Texas Interconnections of the United States

Florida Water Management and Adaptation in the Face of Climate Change

A series of white papers have been prepared by the State University System (SUS) of Florida Universities regarding realized and predicted climate change impacts, with this report specifically addressing water resources and adaptation issues across Florida. The primary objectives of this report are: (1) to identify Florida’s water resources and water-related infrastructure that are vulnerable to climate change; (2) show demographics in the state that are vulnerable to climate change impacts with a focus on water resources and sea level rise; and (3) highlight some of the alternative technologies currently being used to solve water resource supply issues in the state that are likely to expand and be challenged under various scenarios of climate change.

Washington State DOT Climate Impacts Vulnerability Assessment

November 2011

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has written this report in fulfillment of a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to test its conceptual climate risk assessment model developed for transportation infrastructure. WSDOT applied the model using scenario planning in a series of statewide workshops, using local experts, to create a qualitative assessment of climate vulnerability on its assets in each region and mode of transportation across Washington. This report conveys WSDOT’s feedback on the conceptual model and the lessons learned while applying the model to their assets.

Responding to Climate Change in New York State: ClimAID – Transportation Chapter

This state-level assessment provides information on New York's vulnerability to climate change and is specifically designed to assist in the development of adaptation strategies. The goal of the Integrated Assessment for Effective Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in New York State (ClimAID) is to provide decision-makers with progressive information on climate change effects on the state, and to facilitate adaptation planning. The ClimAID report reviews climate change impacts and adaptation options for eight sectors in New York including water resources, coastal zones, ecosystems, agriculture, energy, transportation, public health and telecommunications.

Missoula County Climate Action: Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Community

This assessment summarizes the current and anticipated climate impacts on Missoula County, Montana, and offers strategic recommendations in five focal areas including: water supply, wildfire, flooding and water quality, changes to species and habitats, and the local impacts of global change.  The report is a result of a community-based process in which residents and cross-sector leaders of Missoula County convened over local climate impacts and solutions.  The assessment also includes a comprehensive review of Missoula County’s socioeconomic systems and vulnerabilities to climate change.

Adapting to Rising Tides: Transportation Vulnerability and Risk Assessment Pilot Project

November 2011

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center to work with San Francisco Bay Area shoreline communities on planning for sea level rise and other climate change related impacts in a project called Adapting to Rising Tides (ART). The project involves evaluating potential shoreline impacts, vulnerabilities, and risks while identifying effective adaptation strategies. ART develops and refines adaptation planning tools and resources that will be useful to communities throughout the Bay Area, ultimately to protect ecosystem and community services.

Six Climate Change-Related Events in the United States Accounted for About $14 Billion in Lost Lives and Health Costs

November 2011

In this study, published in the journal Health Affairs, a team of scientists from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) partnered with university economists to investigate the health costs of six climate change-related events that struck the U. S. between 2000 and 2009. The estimated costs totaled more than $14 billion (in 2008 U. S. dollars), with 95 percent due to the value of lives lost prematurely. The study team selected six types of events that will worsen with climate change in ways likely to harm human health - ozone smog pollution, heat waves, hurricanes, mosquito-borne infectious disease, river flooding, and wildfires.

Federal Triangle Stormwater Drainage Study

October 2011

The Federal Triangle Stormwater Drainage study analyzed the causes of a 2006 flood event that put the Federal Triangle Area of Washington D. C. under up to 3 feet of water, including several major traffic arteries, tunnels, and subway stations. The Study analyzes possible alternatives to reducing the risk of interior drainage flooding, including permeable pavements and other Low Impact Development (LID) techniques. In considering the causes of flooding in the area, the Study uses the 200-year flood as a proxy for assessing how climate change may increase flood risks and the frequency of severe storm events.
