A Review of Climate-Change Adaptation Strategies for Wildlife Management and Biodiversity Conservation

This report describes observed and potential effects of global climate change on species and ecosystems. It reviews climate change adaptation plans and other planning approaches from the United States, Canada, England, Mexico, and South Africa. The report also includes sixteen possible adaptation strategies, all proposed in scientific literature and public policy documents, that directly address the conservation of biological diversity. These strategies are grouped into four broad categories: land and water protection and management, direct species management, monitoring and planning, and law and policy.

Dallas Urban Heat Island

This report describes urban heat island effects on Dallas, Texas, and options that could be implemented to help reduce these effects. It summarizes the goals, costs, benefits, actions, and incentives that Dallas has available to cool the city. These include: (1) expanded use and care of trees and vegetation, (2) cool (reflective) and green roofs, and (3) cool or permeable paving strategies that can help cool the city and address storm water issues.

Forest-Climate Working Group
February 2009
The Forest-Climate Working Group (FCWG) is a broad and diverse coalition of forest stakeholders formed to develop consensus recommendations for U. S. forest components of federal climate legislation. The participants in the Forest-Climate Working Group — landowner, industry, conservation, wildlife, carbon finance, and forestry organizations — engaged in a year of facilitated consensus dialog to develop this policy platform. Their recommendations focus in three areas: 1) Offset Credits for Forest Carbon Activities; 2) Beyond Offsets - Incentive, Research, and Technical Assistance Programs; and 3) Forest Adaptation; which are detailed in this report.

NIACS Climate Change Response Framework
2009
The Climate Change Response Framework (CCRF) was established in 2009 led by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS)’s Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. The Framework is intended to help forest and natural resource managers and landowners integrate climate change into natural resource management by utilizing climate science with the on-the-ground management of climate impacts. The six established projects of the Framework cover 19 states and span 14 national forests. The “ecoregions" encompassed include the Central Appalachians, Central Hardwoods, Mid-Atlantic, New England, Northwoods, and Urban.

Beyond Season's End: A Path Forward for Fish and Wildlife in the Era of Climate Change

Beyond Seasons' End describes the impacts of climate change on fish, big game, upland birds, and waterfowl and how these species are responding to impacts. The report explains what can be done to protect fish and wildlife populations and sporting traditions under changing climate conditions, including case studies of successful adaptation and conservation projects. It presents a number of projects from fish and wildlife professionals about actions that the human community can take to assist the wild community adapting to climate change.

Confusion Hill Bypass in Mendocino County, California
2009
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) completed the Confusion Hill Bypass project to reduce the vulnerability of Highway 101 in Northern California to landslides. Between 1996 and 2003, Caltrans spent a total of $14 million repairing and maintaining a 2-mile stretch of the highway. In the winter of 2002/2003, Highway 101 was closed 10 times due to landslides. Caltrans identified landslides and flooding as constant challenges in Caltrans District 1, which includes Confusion Hill in Mendocino County.
