Coastal Resiliency: Adapting to Climate Change in Hampton Roads, Virginia

This report provides a summary of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission’s (HRPDC) Coastal Resiliency work for FY2012 and FY2013 with a focus on the impact of sea level rise on the region’s transportation infrastructure. HRPDC coastal resiliency and sea level programs have been funded in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program (VCZMP) and Virginia Sea Grant (VSG) as well as contributions from local governments in Hampton Roads.

Responding to Climate Change in New York State: ClimAID Integrated Assessment for Effective Climate Change Adaptation - Synthesis Report

Prepared for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), this state-level assessment provides information on New York's vulnerability to climate change and is specifically designed to assist in the development of adaptation strategies. The Integrated Assessment for Effective Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in New York State (also known as "ClimAID") provides information on climate change impacts and adaptation options for eight sectors in New York including water resources, coastal zones, ecosystems, agriculture, energy, transportation, public health and telecommunications.

Preparing for the Effects of Climate Change - A Strategy for California
November 2010
California's 2009 Climate Change Adaptation Strategy called for an independent, non-partisan group of private citizens to act as an adaptation advisory panel to the state. On December 2, 2009, then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that the Pacific Council’s Task Force on California’s Adaptation to Climate Change would act as the Climate Adaptation Advisory Panel to California. The purpose of the Panel, as called for in the state's Strategy, is to identify the most significant threats facing California as a result of climate change, and to make recommendations to reduce the state's vulnerability to those threats.

City of Melbourne Climate Change Adaptation Strategy
June 2009
The City of Melbourne, Australia released their Climate Change Adaptation Strategy in June 2009. This plan, funded by the Australian Governments Department of Climate Change, broadly addresses how Melbourne can prepare for four climate impacts: reduced rainfall and drought, extreme heatwaves and bushfires, intense rainfall and wind storms, and sea-level risk.

Preparing the Pacific Northwest for Climate Change

This report presents an integrated framework for preparing natural, built, human and economic systems for climate change in the Pacific Northwest. This framework is intended to assist climate preparation efforts by public agencies, non-profits, and private companies throughout the Pacific Northwest. The report contains an integrated approach to climate change adaptation planning between each sector to enhance the benefits of climate adaptation across sectors. Sectors include: natural systems (biodiversity and ecosystems), built systems (transportation, water and energy infrastructure), human systems (public health, emergency management, and social services), and economic systems (forestry, agriculture, high-tech).

Natural Capital Project
The Natural Capital Project (NatCap) develops simple, use-driven approaches to valuing nature, works closely with decision makers, and provides free, open source ecosystem service software tools to a broad community of users. They are a partnership combining research innovation at Stanford University and the University of Minnesota with the global reach of conservation science and policy at The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund. NatCap works with leaders around the world to test and demonstrate how accounting for nature's benefits can support more sustainable investment and policy decisions.

The Wyoming State Climate Office (SCO) is a branch of the Wyoming Water Resources Data System (WRDS). Together, WRDS and the SCO are the single largest providers of water and climate-related data in the state. Housed within the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at the University of Wyoming, WRDS and the SCO are funded by the Wyoming Water Development Office.

Town of Princeville, North Carolina: Princeville Community Floodprint: Resilience Strategies for Greater Princeville, North Carolina

The Town of Princeville, North Carolina, located in the Tar River coastal floodplain along the U. S. eastern seaboard, has become increasingly vulnerable to extreme flooding. Princeville has endured multiple catastrophic flood events brought on by powerful Atlantic hurricanes, including Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which flooded approximately 80 percent of the town. Part of the residential community is in the process of relocating to higher ground with hazard mitigation funding support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

North Carolina 2020 Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan
June 2, 2020
The North Carolina Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan is the state’s first climate change adaptation plan. It includes the results of vulnerability assessments within 11 critical sectors, climate justice concerns and strategies, and recommendations for nature-based solutions to enhance ecosystem resiliency and sequester carbon in the state’s natural and working lands. North Carolina Governor Cooper’s 2018 Executive Order 80 directed state agencies to integrate climate adaptation and resiliency planning into their policies, programs, and operations; and mandated that the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) lead the development of this climate risk assessment and resiliency plan for the state.
