Louisiana Coastal Adaptation Toolkit

The Louisiana Coastal Adaptation Toolkit provides adaptation resources that communities can use to address climate impacts on coastal Louisiana. This toolkit highlights adaptation strategies, and offers guidance on how to use certain practices or policy strategies in concert with the natural environment of Louisiana’s coast to foster adaptation. In addition, the toolkit contains links to resources on each of the coastal impacts covered in this document, and funding options to implement these adaptation strategies.

Minnesota Water Sustainability Framework

A result of funding from passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Act in 2008, the Minnesota state legislature directed the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center to construct a 25-year water sustainability framework that describes the primary issues that must be addressed to achieve sustainable water use and recommendations for what the state should do to address those issues.

New York Community Risk and Resiliency Act (S06617B)
September 22, 2014
New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law the Community Risk and Resiliency Act on September 22, 2014. The legislation requires the impacts of extreme weather – such as storm surge, sea-level rise, and flooding – to be considered in some state permitting and funding decisions. The Act advances a number of important recommendations of the NYS 2100 Commission, which the Governor convened after Superstorm Sandy to develop more resilient infrastructure systems across the state.

Understanding the Adaptation Provisions of the Sandy Disaster Relief Appropriations Act

Disaster relief funding presents an opportunity for state and local governments to rebuild in a manner that anticipates and responds to future changes in the climate. In most cases, programs funded through disaster relief appropriations, such as the Sandy Relief Act, provide administering agencies with enough authority to prepare for climate changes during the rebuilding process.

New York State Climate Smart Communities Grant Program
2018
The New York State Climate Smart Communities Grant Program, administered by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, was established in 2016 and provides a matching grant to towns, villages, counties, and boroughs of New York City to implement projects related to climate change adaptation or mitigation or, more specifically, to work towards Climate Smart Communities Certification by undertaking eligible planning actions. Although all municipalities in the state are eligible to apply for these grants, Climate Smart Communities receive extra points in the application process (dependent on their certification level) in order to financially incentivize participation in the program.

Memphis, Tennessee Mid-South Regional GreenPrint
February 5, 2015
In 2015, the Mid-South Regional Commission created the Mid-South Regional GreenPrint as a visioning document for the tri-state area of the greater Memphis region for the next 25 years. The plan envisions a regional network of green space, including connected parks and greenways, or Greenprint. The intention of the Greenprint plan is to address long-term housing and land use, resource conservation, environmental protection, accessibility, community health and wellness, transportation alternatives, economic development, neighborhood engagement, and social equity in the Greater Memphis Area.

Arizona Water Meter - A Comparison of Water Conservation Programs in 15 Arizona Communities

In response to climate change and other factors that increase competition and reduce availability of water in Arizona, Western Resource Advocates' Arizona Water Meter report highlights the water conservation programs of 15 diverse Arizona communities and evaluates their programs by seven important water conservation criteria: 1) minimizing per capita water use; 2) water rate structures that encourage wise water use; 3) community-based water conservation programs; 4) conservation ordinances; 5) funding for conservation programs; 6) stemming system water loss; and 7) effluent reuse.

Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Strategy

The Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, established by President Obama's Executive Order 13632 on December 7, 2012, released this 200-page report with 69 recommendations, to help the Sandy-affected region continue to recover and rebuild. The Task Force included representatives of nearly two dozen federal departments and agencies, and the strategy incorporates additional contributions from state and local governments and key local constituencies.

Case Study: Oakland Community Land Trust - Oakland, California

The Oakland Community Land Trust (OakCLT), in Oakland, California, presents an example of how land trusts can help to reduce displacement pressures in gentrifying cities. It was created in 2009 to stabilize housing threatened with foreclosure as a result of the recession and mortgage crisis. Through mobilization of residents and a local community organization, Urban Strategies Council, the Oakland CLT was formed to acquire and rehabilitate properties in foreclosure. Since it was established, OakCLT has acquired and preserved approximately 50 units of housing and stewards multi-use and commercial properties that provide affordable rents for culturally important businesses and grassroots organizations.
