Climate Adaptation and Action Plan for the Norton Bay Watershed, Alaska

This plan was developed by the Norton Bay Inter-Tribal Watershed Council (NBITWC) to address climate stressors, risks, and adaptation opportunities for tribal villages in the Norton Bay. NBITWC conducts research, education, and advocacy to protect and restore water resources toward tribal interests. The Council represents four Inupiat Eskimo native villages in the Bay, which is located within the Seward Peninsula in northwestern Alaska. The plan includes an economic analysis and forest and water resources assessments, focusing on the restoration of traditional knowledge as a primary adaptation strategy.

Preparing for Tomorrow's High Tide: Final Recommendations for Preparing Delaware for Sea Level Rise
September 2013
These recommendations, formally released in September 2013, were developed by Delaware’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee and by staff of the Delaware Coastal Programs section of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Fifty-five recommendations were developed for adapting to sea level rise in the state, which target the 16 vulnerable resources noted of high or moderate concern in Delaware’s 2012 Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment. These recommendations focus on building the necessary capacity for Delaware agencies, local governments, businesses and individuals to plan for and put into place strategies for responding to sea level rise.

San Francisco's Urban Forest/Street Tree Financing Study

In an effort to address San Francisco, California's declining urban forestry budget, the city's Planning Department commissioned an economic consultant, AECOM, to conduct a "Street Tree Financing Study." This study evaluates the costs and benefits associated with street trees and identifies a range of potential funding strategies.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) Framework
2012
CDC’s Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework provides specific guidance to states and cities on developing strategies and programs aimed at reducing the health consequences of climate change. CDC provides funding for state, territorial and tribal health departments to conduct analytic and programmatic activities by developing public health adaptation strategies using the BRACE framework. CDC’s Climate-Ready States and Cities Initiative is already helping 16 states and 2 cities develop ways to anticipate the public health effects of climate change by applying climate science, predicting specific impacts, and preparing flexible localized programs.

RainReady, an initiative of the Chicago-based nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology, helps communities manage urban flooding in a time of climate change. Urban flooding occurs when rain overwhelms urban drainage systems, causing flooding in buildings and streets. Urban flooding occurs outside of the mapped floodplain, and is distinct from coastal and riverine flooding. RainReady offers flood mitigation and adaptation solutions for individual properties and communities, through community plans, resident education, site assessments, implementation assistance, and linkages to available financing.

Tucson AZ Rainwater Harvesting Rebates
September 2013
Since 2012, the City of Tucson, Arizona has provided over $2 million in rebates for the Rainwater Harvesting Rebates Program, which allows the city’s water utility, Tucson Water, to subsidize the installation of rainwater catchment systems on residential properties throughout the city. The installations increase tree canopy cover, which helps to more effectively manage rainwater resources throughout the year. To increase project participation within low-income neighborhoods, the program provides grants and loans. These systems work to significantly reduce potable water use, push residents to move beyond sustainable practices and towards regenerative practices, and enhance the quality of life by extending the amount of tree canopy across Tucson.

New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (SB S6599)
July 18, 2019
Passed in July of 2019, New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) (Senate Bill S6599) commits the State of New York to implementing several integrated climate adaptation planning and climate justice goals. In addition to aggressive climate mitigation goals — including zero GHG emissions by 2050 and 100% renewable electricity usage by 2040 — the Act aims to address adaptation and resilience across state programming, land use planning, and local government support.

Clean Air Centers in Seattle, Washington
June 2019
The City of Seattle, Washington is establishing five new facilities that will provide clean air for its most at-risk residents during hazardous conditions brought on by wildfires. As the climate warms, Seattle is experiencing a major uptick in the number of wildfires, and consequently more days with unhealthy air quality from particulate matter. This issue is especially significant for Seattle, as the majority of the city’s residents do not have air conditioning, and mostly open windows to circulate air from outside to cool homes.

Forest Resilience Bond - Fighting Fire with Finance
2017
Blue Forest Conservation is developing the Forest Resilience Bond (FRB) to monetize the benefits of forest restoration for climate resilience. Similar to an Environmental Impact Bond or sustainable infrastructure financing, the FRB is a public-private partnership that deploys private capital to support climate resilient national forests. The FRB creates value for a diverse set of stakeholders or beneficiaries of healthy forests - including the U. S. Forest Service (USFS), water and electric utilities, private water-dependent companies, state governments, and insurance companies.

National Park Service Coastal Adaptation Strategies Handbook

The National Park Service (NPS) has developed the Coastal Adaptation Strategies Handbook to support coastal area park responses to the climate change effects associated with coastal storms and sea level rise. This handbook reviews climate change impacts on coastal parks; identifies useful resources and adaptation strategies; provides examples of approaches to address coastal vulnerabilities from NPS as an agency and for individual parks, and offers policy and decision-making guidelines. The report provides guidance for NPS managers, partners, and other practitioners in selecting and implementing climate change adaptation strategies in estuarine and coastal areas, including the Great Lakes.
