Marin County, California Ocean Coast Sea-Level Rise Adaptation Report

Marin County’s “Collaboration: Sea-level Marin Adaptation Response Team” (C-SMART) is a multi-stakeholder, inter-governmental partnership that collaborates to determine sea level rise impacts and adaptation options for the county. This comprehensive analysis from C-SMART presents strategies for increasing resiliency of Marin’s coast with options to accommodate, protect against, or retreat from the threats of sea level rise and coastal hazards.

Los Angeles Clean Up Green Up Ordinance
April, 2016
In April 2016, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a groundbreaking ordinance to address environmental justice concerns within three distinct neighborhoods: Boyle Heights, Pacoima-Sun Valley, and Wilmington. For decades, these three communities – comprised primarily of low-income, Latinx individuals and families – suffered a wide range of health effects, due mostly to the high concentration of polluting industrial sites within their neighborhoods. To address these inequalities, LA City Council passed and implemented the Clean Up Green Up Ordinance with a three-pronged goal in mind: (1) to reduce pollution in the most toxic, hotspot areas; (2) to prevent additional pollution; and (3) to revitalize these neighborhoods through supporting local businesses and economic development.

Neighborhood Gardens Trust - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Neighborhood Gardens Trust has been operating as an entity that protects community gardens in the City of Philadelphia since 1986. Working with community gardeners, local leaders, and neighborhood organizations, NGT is a land trust that helps these individuals or groups secure ownership or long-term lease contracts for these gardens to prevent redevelopment or reuse of the land. The organization focuses the majority of its land acquisition and assistance services in lower-income areas throughout Philadelphia, with a specific emphasis on serving underrepresented communities. Since its founding, NGT has protected 48 community gardens throughout Philadelphia, and is on track to protect at least 70 by 2022.

City of Benicia, California Climate Change Vulnerability and Risk Summary Report
2015
The City of Benicia is a coastal community in the San Francisco Bay area of California. In April 2014, Benicia was awarded a California Coastal Conservancy Climate Ready Grant for $150,000 to conduct a climate change vulnerability assessment and to develop a climate adaptation plan. The Vulnerability and Risk Report was developed in partnership with ICF International and Placeworks, who examined climate change related vulnerabilities and risks in Benicia (primarily sea level rise, flooding and temperature changes).

Baltimore, Maryland Disaster Preparedness and Planning Project (DP3) 2013

The City of Baltimore Maryland’s Disaster Preparedness and Planning Project (DP3) was created by the Department of Planning as an effort to address existing hazards while simultaneously preparing for predicted hazards due to climate change. This project develops a program that integrates an All Hazards Mitigation Plan (AHMP), floodplain mapping, and climate adaptation planning. DP3 links research, outreach, and actions to create a comprehensive and new risk-preparedness system for addressing existing and future impacts.

International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association Forum on Super Storm Sandy: Adaptation and Resilience

The International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) hosted a workshop in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy where agency officials shared strategies for operations and emergency management during extreme weather events. At the “Forum on Super Storm Sandy: Adaptation and Resilience” (Forum), agency officials who had been on the front lines of the response and recovery effort discussed lessons-learned with one another and with Florida state officials. Greenworks Philadelphia is a comprehensive six-year plan (“Plan”) that sets goals for “greening” the City of Philadelphia – increasing the city’s energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the environmental quality of the city, and adapting to the dangers posed by climate change. This case study focuses only on the transportation-related recommendations included in the Plan – increasing the percentage of city assets in a “state of good repair” and using green infrastructure strategies to improve stormwater management and reduce flood impacts to transportation infrastructure.
