Climate Change Adaptation through Local Comprehensive Planning: Guidance for Puget Sound Communities
February 2017
This guidance was developed to support local government decision-makers, planners and community members in the Puget Sound region of Washington to better understand the implications of climate change in the area, and to further climate adaptation planning. The report includes detail on the projected climate change impacts for the region, and guidance on incorporating climate impacts and adaptation planning into local comprehensive plans. The report uses the Washington State Comprehensive Plan requirements under the Growth Management Act to inform the adoption of climate adaptation solutions within local planning elements.

GCC: Policy Considerations for the Maryland Commission on Climate Change

This memorandum from the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) seeks to help Maryland to document the important work it is already doing to prepare for the impacts of climate change and to provide recommendations for additional steps that the state could take, drawing on examples of practices from other states. In order to protect lives, health, property, economies, and natural systems, states need to adapt how they plan, regulate, and make investments to consider future climate change.

Provided by the Arizona State University Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes, the report integrates input from the 2014 Climate Change Resilience: Governance and Reforms Summit in Washington, DC. The summit goals were to explore the cross-sector, multi-level, contentious, and political facets of resilience; and to examine links among resilience, community empowerment, and economic development.

New York State Ocean Action Plan
January 23, 2017
New York Department of Environmental Conservation released a final Ocean Action Plan (OAP) for the state of New York - a ten-year action plan focused on improving ocean ecosystem health, and the ocean’s capacity to provide sustainable benefits to the state. One of the four primary goals included in the plan is to increase resilience to climate change impacts. The OAP will guide State government funding, research, management, and outreach and education choices.

2016 U.S. Department of Energy Environmental Justice Strategy

This strategy document is the culmination of a process that began in November 2007 to review and update the Department of Energy (DOE) 1995 Environmental Justice Strategy. The strategy describes DOE’s plan for complying with Executive Order 12898, Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Population (Clinton, 1994). The strategy outlines its objectives to integrate environmental justice into National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) implementation, minimize climate change impacts on vulnerable people, and comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

USFWS Polar Bear Conservation Management Plan

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Polar Bear Conservation Management Plan was developed as a guide to polar bear conservation in the U. S. , and calls for decisive action to address Arctic warming and protect polar bears from the impacts of climate change. This plan outlines conservation and adaptation strategies for the USFWS and agency partners to support the recovery of polar bears, while articulating the need to lower greenhouse gas levels to ultimately protect the survival of the species.

Climate Change and Health Vulnerability Indicators for California
2017
The Climate Change and Health Equity Program of the California Department of Public Health developed Climate Change and Health Vulnerability Indicators for California. The indicators can help communities and local decision makers to better understand the populations that are more at risk for climate change induced or exacerbated health impacts. DPH suggests that the indicators can be used to screen and prioritize public health action to increase resilience. There are 21 indicators, organized into three domains: environmental exposures, population sensitivity, and adaptive capacity.

The U. S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) Strategic Plan serves as the guiding document for USGCRP through 2021, and this report updates the Program priorities as of 2016. The report summarizes USGCRP’s progress in implementing the Strategic Plan since 2012, and outlines USGCRPS’s primary goals and correlated objectives in interagency research priority areas. USGCRP’s dual mission is to both advance fundamental science and support its use by decision makers - so the report is written for both scientific and decision-maker audiences.

The Our Coast, Our Future (OCOF) project provides online maps and tools of local sea level rise and storm vulnerability within the San Francisco Bay Area, California. OCOF has modelled coastal impacts such as water levels, wave heights, flooding, and erosion; and mapping infrastructure and ecosystem vulnerabilities at scales relevant to planning and management.

Comprehensive Open Space Acquisition Strategy 2016-2020 Green Plan For Connecticut

Developed in 2017 by the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), along with its municipal partners, conservation organizations, and water companies, this update to Connecticut's Green Plan highlights ways for the agency to preserve open space - especially areas that are threatened by development. A 5-Year Action Strategy which covers the period of time from the end of the previous plan through 2020 is included to help unify the efforts of DEEP, stakeholders, and conservation actors with implementation.
