Center for Social Inclusion
The mission of the Center for Social Inclusion (CSI) is to catalyze communities, governments, and other institutions to address structural racial inequity and create equitable outcomes for all. Its primary strategies include: policy and research, institutional change, capacity-building, and shifting the dominant narrative about race.
Energy Democracy, one of CSI's four main programs, promotes local and renewable energy that is determined and managed by community residents themselves. In addition to reducing energy costs, CSI argues that democratic energy solutions have the potential to improve health, spur economic growth, and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. CSI calls for an inclusive approach to policy, capacity-building, and engagement. They focus on efforts that benefit people of color, who face extra barriers in ownership, financing, and access to technology. CSI works to extend production tax credits to include community-owned projects and create community-focused Energy Improvement Districts. Moreover, CSI's Energy Democracy for All interactive map pinpoints communities across the U.S. that are innovating through community-scale renewable energy projects.
