Florida Climate Institute

The Florida Climate Institute (FCI) is a network of universities aimed at fostering interdisciplinary research to better understanding the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise on the economy, ecosystems, and the built environment. FCI has 8 member universities including: Florida A&M University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Florida State University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, the University of Miami, and the University of South Florida.

The Southeast Florida Climate Change Compact counties have begun a collaboration with the Florida Climate Institute.  A Partnership Agreement was signed in October 2014 - aiming to increase the effectiveness of current collaborations among Florida’s institutions of higher learning and the local governments and regional agencies of Southeast Florida. The purpose of the Agreement is to:

  • seek better alignment between public sector information and management needs and ongoing research objectives,
  • to improve coordination among the parties in pursuing competitive research funding opportunities, and
  • to assure that the best and brightest ideas emerging from Florida’s world-class institutions are well positioned for implementation in supporting Southeast Florida’s efforts to adapt to climate change and sea level rise and transition to a more resilient economy and coastal infrastructure.

Through FCI, the Compact counties are working to develop regionally relevant climate indicators. They have also identified specific issues that local practitioners are struggling with, to determine whether FCI has existing data or resources that can help, or whether research interests align such that they can guide future research in such a way to be useful to local government practitioners.

FCI provides access to all of their projects and research on the website, under the topics of:

Ecosystems - Agriculture, Coastal Ecosystems, Terrestrial Ecosystems

Natural Resources - Climate Sciences, Water, Energy, Land

Human Resources - Human Dimensions, Extension, and Education
