Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN)
The University of Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN) carries a mission of “Science Serving Society.” ND-GAIN works to enhance the world’s understanding of adaptation through knowledge, products and services that inform public and private actions, and investments in vulnerable communities.
ND-GAIN's annual Country Index and Urban Adaptation Assessment are online tools for decisionmakers globally that are addressing climate change impacts and resilience across environmental, economic and social sectors.
The Country Index is an open-source tool that ranks countries annually based on how vulnerable they are to climate change and how prepared they are to adapt. The index analyzes many sectors to make its calculations, including water, infrastructure, coastal protection, agriculture and energy.
The Urban Adaptation Assessment is also an online publicly available interactive database that assesses the climate risk and readiness of every city in the United States with a population over 100,000. Users can rank a city's risk and readiness for climate hazards, with metrics on extreme heat, extreme cold, inland flooding, drought, and sea level rise, as well as the impact of social inequities.
