San Francisco Dept. of Public Health: Program on Health, Equity and Sustainability
The Program on Health, Equity and Sustainability is an inter-disciplinary team at the San Francisco (California) Department of Public Health that works in partnership with residents, public agencies and private organizations to advance healthy environments and social justice.
Some of the Program’s primary goals are focused on collaboration among public agencies and community organizations; expanding public understanding of the relationships between the natural, built, and social environments and human health; and supporting local participation in public policy-making.
The Program’s Climate and Health web page includes: Vulnerability Assessments; Community Resilience Education and Outreach resources; Emergency Planning resources; Research and Reports; Indicators, Open Data and “Innovation.”
The Program offers many services, including:
- Air Quality and Noise Modeling
- PEQI Technical Assistance - The Pedestrian Environmental Quality Index (PEQI) was developed to assess the quality of the physical pedestrian environment and inform pedestrian planning needs.
- SF Indicator Project Applications and Training - The San Francisco Indicator Project is an online framework and data repository that examines how San Francisco neighborhoods perform across eight dimensions of a vision for a healthy, equitable community.
- Health Impact Assessment Training
The Urban Health and Place Team within the Program on Health, Equity and Sustainability develops, applies and disseminates spatial tools, research and expertise to assess environmental conditions in response to urban health inequities and environmental policy gaps. The team assesses many elements of the built environment in the San Francisco Bay area including: land use, transportation, housing, water, air quality, noise quality, climate, and other aspects of health.
