Burlington, Vermont Climate Action Plan

This report provides an overview of Burlington Vermont’s Climate Action Plan including climate mitigation and social equity goals. Burlington’s Climate Action Plan is comprised of over 200 strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A section of the plan is devoted to “Climate Change and Equity,” and the City of Burlington has identified key areas which present equity issues either presently or in the future.

The report briefly describes climate change impacts on social equity in the areas of Housing, Food Security; Infrastructure and Transportation; Extreme Weather Events and Impacts; and Participation, outreach, and education. According to the report, these issues will be explored in the future to create a more comprehensive and transparent plan of action.

A greenhouse gas emissions inventory was conducted and results are provided for government operations, airport operations, and the community. Burlington’s emission reduction targets are illustrated for each of the 3 categories. The first target requires leveling off the growth of emissions by 2016 and bring them back to 2010 levels for all three. The second target level addresses 2025 emissions goals. The second target sets a 20% reduction from 2010 levels by 2025 for municipal operations; a 10% reduction from 2010 levels by 2025 for airport operations; and a community-wide 10% reduction from 2010 levels by 2025.
