California King Tides Initiative

The California King Tides Initiative encourages members of the public to document (photograph) the highest seasonal tides (or king tides) that occur along the state’s coast. Seasonal high tide events can provide a preview of what might be experienced regularly in the future as a result of rising sea levels. King tide events are an opportunity to share what you see in your community with others.

The objectives of the King Tide Photo Initiative are to:

• Engage Californians in a conversation about the future of coastal areas
• Identify and catalog coastal areas that are currently vulnerable to tidal inundation
• Build an online resource of images that can be used by everyone – artists, scientists, school groups, coastal planners –  to document, visualize, and communicate about coastal hazards

Photos taken during King Tide events document impacts to private property, public infrastructure, and wildlife habitat across the state.  King Tides images offer a living record of the changes to our coasts and shorelines and a glimpse of what our daily tides may look like in the future as a result of sea level rise.
