Coastal Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment: Compendium of Coastal Resources Tools and Methodologies

This compendium produced by the University of Wollongong and Coastal Zone Management Pty. Ltd. describes tools and methods which can be applied globally to support the development of coastal vulnerability assessments and climate change adaptation.

In general, the methods included in the compendium are concerned with establishing the current physical condition of the coast, considering variability of each condition in the face of ongoing natural environmental factors, and evaluating the likely response to climate change and associated sea level rise.

The report offers a synopsis of the key attributes of each tool and references to further pertinent information. The compendium includes the following tools and methods:

  • IPCC Common Methodology
  • UNEP Methodology
  • Bruun rule
  • Coastal Zone Simulation Model (COSMO)
  • Synthesis and Upscaling of Sea-level Rise Vulnerability Assessment Studies (SURVAS)
  • Shoreline Management Planning (SMP)
  • Coastal Vulnerability indices
  • DINAS-Coast and DIVA
  • SimCLIM (Simulator of Climate Change Risks and Adaptation Initiatives)
  • Community Vulnerability Assessment Tool (CVAT)
  • Community Vulnerability, Adaptation Assessment and Action (CV&A)
  • Reef Resilience Toolkit
  • Smartline
