Drought-Ready Communities - A Guide to Community Drought Preparedness
The Drought-Ready Communities pilot project culminated in 2010 with this "Guide to Community Drought Preparedness" that communities throughout the U.S. can use to understand and reduce their drought risk. The process outlined in the Guide is broad-based, recognizing that drought creates problems that go beyond the scope of which water suppliers alone can address.
Worksheets and other exercises are provided that can help communities understand how drought has affected water supplies and overall community stability in the past. The Guide can also assist communities in identifying their drought monitoring resources, so they can anticipate emerging drought. A planning section helps determine the proactive steps to reduce the risk of drought, and recommends planning responses to drought before the next occurrence. The Guide includes case studies and an extensive resource collection of plans and response actions from municipalities which have already planned for drought, including both processes and solutions.
